His attention to emotional detail is what made his previous book Stalingrad such a magnificent work, combining a sweeping hisorical narrative with a remarkable sensitivity to human drama. Yet he also highlights the small details of ordinary people caught in the nightmare of history--the sick children evacuated at the last minute from a Potsdam hospital; the Soviet soldiers shaving themselves for the first time in weeks so that they would make appropriately presentable conquerors; and the Nazi Youth teenagers peddling their bikes in despairing, last-ditch attacks against the Red Army's tanks.
The story Beevor tells is an almost unremittingly terrible one--one of death, rape, hunger and human misery--but he tells it with both an epic sweep and an alertness to individuality. The result is a masterpiece of narrative history that is as powerful as Stalingrad. --Nick Rennison -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

The book starts with the Allied armies massing on the borders of Germany and the Russians advancing into East Prussia. The Russians attack as they go and wherever they go, they plunder, loot and rape. In fact, one of my complaints about this book is that Beevor focuses obsessively on the rapes committed by the Russians towards German women. OK, it happened and I condemn it, but do we really need an in-depth analysis of rape, why it happens, who they did it to, how they did it....Beevor could just have briefly said something about the rapes and then moved on but instead he devotes an unbelievable amount of the book going into the subject.
Anyway, the book covers the Yalta conference, the Allies' advance across Germany, the decision to give Berlin to the Russians, the attack on Berlin itself....the book also gives insights into the plans made by senior Nazis to save themselves, details of Hitler's suicide, and we also have sections going into the politics of it all. We find out Stalin deceived Churchill and Roosevelt about the strategic importance of Berlin because he wanted the Soviet Union to control Germany when it was all over.
Overall, a good book, well researched, fairly easy to read, but just too much info on the rapes. Recommended.
