This work features translation and commentary by Marc Hudson. It includes an Introduction and Notes by Martin Garrett. "Beowulf" is the longest surviving poem of Anglo-Saxon England. Beowulf, a young warrior of the Geats, comes to the aid of Hrothgar, king of the Danes, in his time of need. He first fights the hellish Grendel, then struggles with Grendel's no less fearsome mother in her hall beneath the cold waters of the mere. More than fifty years later, Beowulf, now king of the Geats, must face his final challenge in the shape of a huge and terrifying dragon. But "Beowulf" is not just an adventure story. Other tales of war, feuding, and loss in less mythical worlds are interwoven with the main plot in such a way as to force readers to ask questions about the heroic code; equally thought-provoking are the juxtaposition of virtuous and vicious characters, the presence of some women who are helpless victims and others who exert a strong influence on men, and above all the fact that the characters are pagan while the poet is clearly (though not insistently) Christian.

Marc Hudson's thoughtful modern English version combines readability with detailed attention to both the spirit and the meaning of the original poem.

A Brilliant Translation 11. Juli 2012
Von Halibut118 - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Picked this up in a small bookshop for about £2. One of the best bargains I have ever found! Marc Hudson's translation retains all the archaic feel of a tale such as Beowulf, his literary style harking back to such an ancient time. And yet the poetic, lofty language is still accessible to the reader. Having looked at other translations, Hudson I feel has captured the essence of the 1000 year-old saga's history, creating for us a wonderful version of the story.
Beautiful read of my absolute favorite story of all time! 6. Oktober 2013

While I am a purist and have studied many translations of Beowulf (Chickering still my favorite "scholarly" version), I am so pleased to find Marc Hudson's work in this translation---especially his sensitive study guide and commentary. I intend to use this with my high school senior class with students who have little use for "English Lit" in any form---but I know the story will resonate once they dig into it. This version/variation/translation I believe will provide that bridge for them. It is a pleasure to read and seems to hold to the original story-telling delights of great centuries past.

This translation is clear and musical, translated by a fine poet. Its language resonates with the dignity of the original epic.
