Amazon.co.uk

It has been said, and not without good reason, that much of what we know as modern Continental Philosophy is no more than a mere footnote to Martin Heidegger's (1889-1976) mammoth Being and Time. Without doubt Heidegger's major work this translation, by John Macquarrie and Edward Robinson, was the first English interpretation of Sein und Zeit, Heidegger's groundbreaking investigation into the question of Being, and although it has its critics it has served as the standard rendering of the work for many years. Whilst Joan Stambaugh's more idiomatic translation is certainly a little easier to read, the Macquarrie and Robinson work has not been surpassed for its fidelity to the original German. Serious students of Heidegger should perhaps read both translations whilst bearing in mind that Heidegger himself was profoundly concerned with the thought structures of any language that so handicap the possibility of translation. Being and Time is an essential reference book for anyone interested in modern philosophy. --Mark Thwaite -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Taschenbuch .

Kurzbeschreibung

One of the most important philosophical works of our time--a work that has had tremendous influence on philosophy, literature, and psychology, and has literally changed the intellectual map of the modern world.

clear up the confusion 13. Mai 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I am afraid people might get a little confused by the other reviewer's comments. It basically boils down to this: if you are adequately grounded in the most rigorous european and eastern philosophical systems you will probably understand what Heidegger is doing in this book, but if you aren't you won't. It's not for everybody, but it is for those who want to see how far they can go with 20th century philosophy. The book is hard to read, the concepts are hard to grasp, the work is in my opinion worth it if you're asking the questions in the first place. It is not positivism, which is to say it is not easy, which is not to say that it is unintelligible. Some parts may not work for some people, but you'll never know which parts those will be for you unless you read it. Obviously german philosophy doesn't work for everybody, especially for those in the anglo/american 'tradition', since it requires both intense work and intense discipline to get through it. Philosophy was never supposed to be easy. Don't be fooled by those who fall by the wayside then crawl into their holes preferring candlelight to the sun. It's the best book of philosophy written in the 20th century, which is why it's been the most influential.

Perhaps, like Kant's `Critique of Pure Reason', Heidegger's `Being and Time' is an often name-dropped text but it remains unread most of the time. Well, if you read it, a few pointers are needed: 1. Heidegger assumes `Being' is expressed through Dasein (there-being); 2. Dasein is constituted by Time and Space; 3. Dasein's constitution is investigated as `ontology' (Gr.`ontos'-existence); 4. Ontology is marking out of the ontological and ontic structures of existence qua human Dasein; 5. `Ontological' structures are meta-ta-physika (beyond the physical) and constitute the ontic (physical everyday behaviours and thoughts); 6. `Ontological' constitution of the ontic `facts of life' is an elegant description of time and spatiality, which, unlike Kant, does not ground itself in Cognition; 7. As Heidegger presents it in `BT', Existence as such Being qua being is constituted by Time temporalizing itself; 8. Heidegger attempts to ground Dasein's spatiality through time but fails, and Being and Time leaves unsaid `Being and Spatiality'. Spatiality and its relation to Time haunts Heidegger's later work as an unsolved enigma.

if you're the kind of person that reads derrida in the bathroom, then you'll enjoy this masacre of clarity. as heidegger says, after all, phenomenology is just "to let that which shows itself be seen from itself in the very way in which it shows itself from itself." right. whatever you say, martin.
