1. März 2001 Elements of Fiction Writing
Get your stories off to a roaring start. Keep them tight and crisp throughout. Conclude them with a wallop. Is the story or novel you've been carrying around in your head the same one you see on the page? Or does the dialogue suddenly sound flat and predictable? Do the events seem to ramble? Translating a flash of inspiration into a compelling story requires careful crafting. The words you choose, how you describe characters, and the way you orchestrate conflict all make the difference-the difference between a story that is slow to begin, flounders midway, or trails off at the end-and one that holds the interest of readers and editors to the final page. By demonstrating effective solutions for potential problems at each stage of your story, Nancy Kress will help you...hook the editor on the first three paragraphs make-and keep-your story's "implicit promise" build drama and credibility by controlling your prose Dozens of exercises help you strengthen your short story or novel. Plus, you'll sharpen skills and gain new insight into...the price a writer pays for flashbacks six ways characters should "reveal" themselves techniques for writing-and rewriting Let this working resource be your guide to successful stories-from beginning to end.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Invaluable! 19. Januar 2000
Von Ein Kunde
This book, along with "Plot" by Ansen Dibbell and "Description" by Monica Wood are my favorites of the "Elements of Fiction" series by Writer's Digest Books.
Nancy Kress gives a clear and concise guide to keeping your momentum going when beginning a novel or short story. She offers practical advice on most, if not all, areas of fiction writing (e.g. characterization, plots, style). Best of all, she does all of this in an encouraging manner that makes you believe you *can* get through and eventually write the story you've envisioned in your mind.
I find her approach extremely helpful and as a result, I ended up buying her book on "Dynamic Characters" as well. I only wish she could write more fiction technique books!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Most constructive. 29. Oktober 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This review is based on personal experience and is penned in a bid to help other aspiring writers.

I have been writing about scuba diving and shipwrecks for several years (my first piece appeared in 1978!), and my books have won awards. That genre, however, involves research and describing whatever I find underwater.

Quite separately, for many years I have been working on a novel only to discover Fiction is not as easy as it might appear - even for a modestly successful writer such as myself. Fiction is not about my ability to tell a particular story. Instead, it requires me to learn how to weave intrigue into the everyday life of the central character so that the reader WANTS to continue reading. For example, a Memoirs or Biography is the retelling of a series of events - year by year, as they happen to the subject of the work. The life of a fictional character, however, cannot be a series of stories without the addition of unanswered questions and other events of which he is unaware (the intrigue!) along the way. In my case; yes I have a central plot, yes there is sex and violence (in moderation!) and yes the outcome is exciting. That however, is not enough and is why I have found myself starting and shelving the book over many years.

Finally, I recently purchased a number of books about writing techniques and the various lessons I need to learn. I am studying each in turn and each will be reviewed in time.

As the cover of ‘Write Great Fiction - Plot & Structure’ by James Scott Bell suggests, this book gives an insight into “Techniques and exercises for crafting a plot that grips readers from start to finish.” Already, I have learned a great deal and would suggest any would-be author of Fiction should study this excellent work.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The best in this series 5. Juli 2000

My favorite in this series, this book is the definitive source in describing how important each part of your book is to the overall story. I ended up re-writing the first three chapters of my novel based on the author's excellent advice. She gives specific examples of how to grab the reader from the very first sentence, keep him/her reading the first few pages, and holding their attention all the way to the climax. A must for any writer's library.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great how-to and where-to 20. August 2008
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
I bought this book because I found "Dynamic characters" by the same author extremely helpful.

Again, this book is marvellous! For every part of a novel/story, Kress explains the function and how to best fulfill it. It helps me a great deal to keep track of my novel project, to not loose direction.

But the best advice for me are there hints on the revising process in the back of her book. Which steps go first, which later. I've used "Self-editing for fiction writers" yet but Kress showed me in which order to go through these steps - and again keeping track.

Worth it! But only four stars as there's much less content than in "Dynamic characters". I'm sure Kress would have had much more and more detailled advice to give, and I'm sorry it's not in the book.
