Kurzbeschreibung

Beginning Django E-Commerce guides you through producing an e-commerce site using Django, the most popular Python web development framework. Topics covered include how to make a shopping cart, a checkout, and a payment processor; how to make the most of Ajax; and search engine optimization best practices. Throughout the book, you'll take each topic and apply it to build a single example site, and all the while you'll learn the theory behind what you're architecting. * Build a fully functional e-commerce site. * Learn to architect your site properly to survive in an increasingly competitive online landscape with good search engine optimization techniques. * Become versed in the Django web framework and learn how you can put it to use to drastically reduce the amount of work you need to do to get a site up and running quickly. What you'll learn * Understand Django best practices for architecting a web site that will eventually be put into production. * Leverage Django templates to maintain a consistent look and feel across your site. * Learn search engine optimization best practices with search engine friendly URLs, metatags, and an autogenerated Google site map. * Follow best practices for security so the bad guys don't get control of your site or compromise your data. * Learn about developing and deploying your Python code on the Google App Engine. * Construct an enterprise-level shopping cart application that can actually receive payments from Authorize.net and Paypal. Who this book is for This book is for programmers looking to learn how to quickly and effectively leverage the Django web framework to build lightweight, powerful web sites. While the book is aimed at developers interested in creating e-commerce sites, the topics covered apply to any other site you might build with Django. You'll learn how to optimize your site for search engines, secure your pages to thwart hackers, and deploy your site into production all with Django. Along the way, you'll build a fully functional e-commerce module that will have you up and selling stuff on the web in no time! Table of Contents * Best Laid Plans * Creating a Django Site * Models for Sale * The Shopping Cart * Site Checkout & Orders * Creating User Accounts * Product Images * Implementing Product Search * Intelligent Cross-Selling * Adding in Ajax * Search Engine Optimization * Web Security Overview * Improving Performance * Django Testing * Deployment * Django on Google App Engine

Über den Autor

Jim McGaw is a web developer with several years of experience developing enterprise-level web applications, particularly online catalog and shopping cart sites. Jim believes that anything worth doing is worth doing right, and since there is often more than one way to do something, he works very hard to make sure that he does it correctly. He relishes the opportunity to work with technology on a daily basis, and he especially enjoys enlightening others about the latest web trends, like front-end engineering and Ajax, as well as the other nuances of his craft.

Good Book and Responsive Author 18. November 2009
Von C. Young - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
Though I haven't yet completed this book, I like the author's writing style and the information he presents. I also like that fact that he has you write code by yourself instead of just suggesting 3rd party plug-ins to accomplish a particular task (unlike some other Django books). Though the title would suggest this book is only about E-Commerce, it isn't. It is a great introduction to Django and covers everything someone new to Django would need to know to get started.

I bought two Django books published by Apress at about the same time. The first one, Practical Django Projects - 2nd Edition, is a good book, but it has some errors in it, and the author has been unresponsive in addressing them, so they are not included in the books errata on Apress's website. Another negative is that the source code that is supposed to be included with the book wasn't for several months, and though it is now, it is incomplete.

This book also has some errors in it, but the author has been very responsive in commenting on them and getting them out to Apress's errata page so that people new to Django won't be frustrated and unable to move past them. This kind of dedication is very important and appreciated. The book is good on its own, but with the added support of the author, it is a great title.

Excellent book 1. Dezember 2009
Von Jeffrey Green - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I would recommend this book. Well written and good examples. I have been using django for over 2 years and it helped me
learn some of the functionality within django that I was confused about. As far as an ecommerce site, this book makes it a lot easier than trying to use Satchmo.

Helping to fill the gap 21. März 2010
Von J. Gartin - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
This is a good book for getting practical application examples using Django. The Django/Python community is lacking more literature like this (IMHO). Where developers talk less about the inner workings/libraries of Django/Python and more about how to use it in a practical project.

This book covers more than just Django, but also discusses the ancillary technologies used when developing a website/web-application (like css, javascript, etc).

If you are new to Django and need something more than an intro to the framework/platform, this would be a good purchase. You might want to skip a few chapters if you have a background in Django (this is a "beginning" book not "pro"), as the book takes you from the very start. Excellent resource for web developers wanting to get started with Django.
