Because of Winn-Dixie, a big, ugly, happy dog, 10-year-old Opal learns 10 things about her long-gone mother from her preacher father. Because of Winn-Dixie, Opal makes new friends among the somewhat unusual residents of her new hometown, Naomi, Florida. Because of Winn-Dixie, Opal begins to find her place in the world and let go of some of the sadness left by her mother's abandonment seven years earlier.

With her newly adopted, goofy pooch at her side, Opal explores her bittersweet world and learns to listen to other people's lives. This warm and winning book hosts an unforgettable cast of characters, including a librarian who fought off a bear with a copy of War and Peace, an ex-con pet-store clerk who plays sweet music to his animal charges, and the neighborhood "witch," a nearly blind woman who sees with her heart. Part Frankie (The Member of the Wedding), part Scout (To Kill a Mockingbird), Opal brings her own unique and wonderful voice to a story of friendship, loneliness, and acceptance. Opal's down-home charm and dead-on honesty will earn her friends and fans far beyond the confines of Naomi, Florida. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

"Take one disarmingly engaging protagonist and put her in the company of a tenderly rendered canine and you've got yourself a recipe for the best kind of down-home literary treat. Kate DiCamillo's voice in Because of Winn-Dixie should carry from the steamy, sultry pockets of Florida clear across the miles to enchant young readers everywhere." — Karen Hesse, author of the Newbery-award winner Out of the Dust

5.0 von 5 Sternen What a find.... 31. Juli 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I am not a frequest reader of children's fiction. I picked up this book because of the Saturdays outings to Winn-Dixie with my mother as a child. A few days ago I took it off my to-be-read pile and I read it TWICE before I could put it down. This is a "must read" for children 5 to 105. "Because of Winn-Dixie" left a sweet and sorrowful taste in my heart (if this sounds corny, read the book). Fantastic work. I'm ready for another one by this author.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Joy to Read 20. Juli 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I am usually too stingy to actually buy a book, prefering to get my reading material from the library, but after reading the first chapter of WINN-DIXIE while sitting in a bookstore, I realized that this was a story that I wanted to own for myself.
BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE is a beautifully written story about dogs and friendship and healing. Strong characterization, a vivid setting, and one very appealing dog make this book a winner. I resisted the temptation to read the entire book in one night, wanting to spread the pleasure out through several settings. I agree with a previous reviewer who compared the tone of the story to TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, another of my favorites. Its simple elegance also reminds me of SARAH PLAIN AND TALL. I'll be recommending this story to my friends both young and old.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Mother Daughter Book Club 17. Juli 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This book contained a preacher, dog and motherless child. Other books it reminded us of were The Mitford series and Lightning's Last Hope. We liked the realistic but zany characters and the heartwarming story about how a dog can transform a young girl's life who happens to be new in town. Just imagine a dog that smiles! We hope Kate Dicamillo continues with a sequel to Because of Winn-Dixie.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Read This Book! 11. Juli 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
As a lover of good writing and story-telling and a reader of numerous "children's books", and as the caretaker of three of my own stray "Winn-Dixies", I naturally was attracted to this story. How glad I am that I was.
I read this thing in one gulp. It is wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! It is the best book I've read this year, and one of the best I've read in several years. It is a small book, but a HUGE life-affirming story. Read it! It will grab your heart and never let go.

5.0 von 5 Sternen completely charming 9. Juli 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Because of Winn-Dixie is a completely charming and satisfying book. India Opal, a young girl with an unusual name, a preacher father and a homely dog named Winn-Dixie moves to a new town and manages to make it her home. Wonderfully memorable characters, the sweet relationship between India and her pooch, and the individual stories that compose each chapter endear this book to the reader. As India tells the story from her perspective, she learns to value herself and enjoy others that are different and new to her. A quick and enjoyable read that will leave a smile on your face.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Heartfelt Look Through a Young Girl's Eyes 13. Juni 2000
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
As a longtime resident of a small Florida town, I can honestly say that this story rings true on so many layers. At first, Opal seems to be a very average child, who throughout the course of each chapter, blossoms with poise, elegance & a maturation only rivaled by few adults, as she develops relationships with others. She thinks she owes this new-found confidence to her recently befriended canine companion, who evokes a sense of love, compassion & self-worth that is in turn transcended to everyone who enters Opal's life. It is a wonderful story and spiritual lesson--and not just for a child.

Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I am an avid reader of books for young people. This book was a wonderful surprise. I expected a 'nice' read. What a got was a touching, well written novel that I would recommend wholeheartedly to all ages. As a self-proclaimed 'book snob', I don't say these things lightly. Well done!
