Kurzbeschreibung

Because It's There takes us on a marvelous photographic journey with more than 90 adventurous and spectacular images from five continents. Authors/Photographers Charlie and Diane Winger believe there is no better reason to move beyond a familiar horizon, explore what lies around the next bend, and discover a world outside our previous experience than "Because it's there."

Like George Mallory, who uttered that famous response when asked why he strove to be the first to climb Mount Everest, the Wingers are also inspired by mountains. Charlie is the mountaineer of the family, and nearly all the snow-covered, glaciated, massive peaks in this photographic journey were his passion (and obsession). Diane is the hiker and casual rock climber, but has ventured up a few of those more challenging mountains along the way.

The Wingers draw on their extensive collection of photographs taken while writing guidebooks, climbing and trekking among some of the most beautiful peaks in the world, and enjoying time in special outdoor areas which they have come to love. Along the way, they tell a few stories and share a few laughs.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Charlie is a prolific mountaineer with a passion for climbing lists of peaks: the 200 highest mountains in Colorado, the 50 state highpoints, 100 USGS-named peaks in Death Valley, the 57 ultra-prominence peaks in the lower US, the highest mountains in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Australia, and many more lists few people understand (or want to).

Diane takes a more relaxed approach to hiking and rock climbing, placing a high priority on hiking on established trails, and hiking to places that are scenic. She is a member of the unofficial “49ers Club,” having reached the top of 49 state highpoints. Her motto: “Just say no to Denali.”

Charlie and Diane live in Colorado and are co-authors of several guidebooks on outdoor recreation. They also collaborated on Charlie’s memoir which delves into more details about his numerous climbing adventures and divulges his very surprising and inspiring personal history.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Overall fun to look at 9. März 2014

This would make a good coffee table book. Would also make a nice gift for the armchair mountaineer in your family.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Some beautiful pictures! 30. März 2015

Some of the pictures were absolutely breathtaking. Others I passed right over. I found myself passing over the text as well. I guess I was more interested in the pictures. I got this kindle version for free, and while I *did* enjoy looking at the pictures, it's not something I would have bought because it's just not my usual reading fare.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Beautiful Places 5. Januar 2013

Gorgeous places, with brief explanations of each picture. I wish the captions tied the pictures together better, by telling the story of each trek. I found that quite often, I was left wanting to know more than the authors shared. I don't want a minute by minute account, just a more cohesive story to go with the lovely photos.

Photo books highlight the one real flaw with kindle books - no change of orientation. It would be nice if I could read the captions beside the photographs instead of having to flip back and forth. Being able to turn my mac sideways and see the pictures larger would also be nice.

A few reviews called the photos amateurish. These are very good quality photographs (with one or two exceptions taken 30 years ago.)The authors are hiking and climbing enthusiasts, not photographers, but the quality is quite good. So, they aren't Nat. Geo. quality, they aren't that far off.

5.0 von 5 Sternen "Breathtaking" Photographic Journey 27. November 2011
Von Jo Streep - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Charlie and Diane Winger have done it again! Their photographic journey in "Because It's There" takes the reader from mountain peaks to crevasses to sand dunes to sunsets to beautiful flowers and finally to green rice fields across five continents. I would recommend that this book be purchased in conjunction with "Two Shadows" (or any of their other books) as it gives the reader a chance to not only read but also to see their journey and vicariously experience what brought the Winger's to publish some of the most breathtaking photographs this reader has ever seen.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Poor composition 7. April 2012

Admirable climbing and mountaneering shown in the photos but the photos are snapshot-like and poorly composed. They are better suited to a photo album or a slide night, not a book.
