Set in an unnamed West African country, Iweala's first novel shows civil war from a child's viewpoint. After his mother and sister escape and his father is killed, the traumatized young narrator is discovered by guerrilla fighters. Frightened and alone, he joins the men, becoming a soldier in an impoverished army of terror headed by a charismatic and treacherous leader who tells his young followers that killing "is like falling in love. You cannot be thinking about it." Writing in the boy's West African English, Iweala distills his story to the most urgent and visceral atrocities, and the scenes of bloodshed and rape are made more excruciating by the lyrical, rhythmic language. In the narrator's memories of village life, biblical stories, and creation myths, Iweala explores the mutable separation between human and beast and a child's struggle to rediscover his own humanity after war: "I am some sort of beast or devil," the boy says, "But I am also having mother once, and she is loving me." So far I have only read very positive reviews on this book, but I have to contradict.
I came across it because it was highly recommended by a lecturer of mine in conflict research, saying something like: "If you want to know about child soldiers, it's all in this book".
This is only partially true. The author mentions implicitly quite some facts that political scientists know about the 'average child soldier' (far away from giving a complete depiction). But much more than getting a clearer view on this topic, the actual accomplishment of the book is that the reader is able to look inside the main character, torn between his basic childhood moral and the pressure of his new lifestyle. Unfortunately this is not the main aspect; it is centered on the description of the everyday life of a child soldier.
It sure is shocking to read about the horrors of war in a very simple language, but on the whole I didn't like the style of the novel. The first-person narrator is talking like a European caricature of an 'African jungle kid', and he has a strange set of knowledge, I couldn't explain with his age or cultural background (unfortunately I cannot recall an example, but I was wondering from time to time about the things he knows and doesn`t know about the world). To me these flaws undermined the authenticity of the whole story. While reading, I always had the impression to share the thoughts of a western intellectual, instead of experiencing a story that actually could have happened.
I know I'm contradicting the world elite of book critics, but to me this was just a mediocre book on an interesting topic.

I ordered this book after having read an article in the German weekly paper "Die Zeit". It is hard to read as a pasttime and I am most intrigued by the author's capability of the language he uses, which seems so original.
The story seems to be an autobiography but is not. I am still not sure, if this makes it a better book or leaves the reader with the impression of having read just a novel. The story has moved me though and I think a lot about the boy and his pityful life.
I would recommend the book without doubt.

das thema kindersoldaten wird vom jungen nigerianischen autor sehr packend aber nicht sensationslüstern behandelt. die geschichte des 9 jähringen agu, der aus nacktem überlebenskampf zur grausamen killermaschine wird, ein bub der selbst am allermeisten opfer ist. die kapitel sind schön konstruiert mit rückblicken und rotem faden durch das ganze buch. ein lesenswertes, aufrüttelndes stück literatur, dem man beachtung schenken sollte!
