The novel If Beale Street Could Talk" is written by James Baldwin who lived from 1924 to1987. He was born in Harlem, NY City and wrote this book in 1973.
James Baldwin tries to illustrate racism and discrimination of blacks at this time, especially in Harlem New York where the novel is set.
The book is about a discriminated young black couple that lives in Harlem, New York. The protagonist "Tish" is pregnant and is in love with "Fonny", the other main character.
Everything is fine until "Fonny" is accused of having raped a woman. He is put in jail but "Tish´s" family fights for "Fonny's" right and tries to reveal the truth to get him out of prison.
Although discrimination is a mainly social theme, Baldwin puts it into a familiar frame.
The plot is primary to the elements of the story.
The characters show the bitterness but also the hope of the Afro-American. Especially the main characters "Tish" and "Fonny" develop during the story. The characters aren't always described directly.
Baldwin writes in my opinion very comprehensible and uses medium long sentences. The dialogues in this novel are very effective but sometimes too complicated.
