L. Ron Hubbard's most famous book may be, as he says in the introduction, pure science fiction but it is also pure drivel--so much like a third-rate pulp adventure from the 1930s that it is almost unbelievable that it actually dates from 1982. The prose is appalling, the plot riddled with clichés and the depiction of the year 3000 lacks imagination. Here we find Jonnie Goodboy Tyler and his cardboard cut-out allies defending a very old-fashioned vision of the future against the giant alien Psychlos. It's the sort of Flash Gordon yarn George Lucas so brilliantly used as the starting point for his Star Wars universe but the result is 1050 pages of perhaps the very worst science fiction ever written. If you want great space opera, try Hyperion by Dan Simmons, orNeverness by David Zindell.
As a fast moving, simplistic story of good vs. evil, driven by action and corny dialogue in the manner of those old black and white serials, it does the job and is the perfect vehicle for Hollywood producers more concerned with special effects than story. But today's readers, now used to intelligent plotting and characters and stories that actually have something useful and interesting to say, will find Battlefield Earth sadly lacking in almost all areas. --Gary S. This title is now better remembered for being transformed into one of the worst B-movies in history. Don't blame the book, however, which is well regarded in sf circles. This 20th-anniversary edition offers the full text of the original. Galaxy Press, which launched this July, will reprint a number of Hubbard's books. If your existing copy looks as if it has been on the battlefield, this quality hardcover will make a nice replacement.

This book was worth the time. Don't worry about it's length. Most novels this long take 900 pages to build up the story, and then finally have a climactic ending. This book is like a rollercoaster! Every other chapter is intense. You can really get lost in another world when reading this book.

This is the only one of Hubbard's works that I've read in its entirety. Some of the phrasing is a little odd, I get a sense that Hubbard was fumbling a bit as he tried to tell the story, and a few of the scientific issues I find somewhat suspect, but it's still a good read though quite long. In some ways it's like a moderately good mystery: you can see as each major crux is reached that you had the necessary information to deduce it. I think this is best read in installments; you're likely to get severe mental indigestion if you try to read it without any breaks.
Definitely a 'G' rating. Not only are there no sexual situations, but even the violence inherent in genocide is treated distantly and with no gory particulars.

Having been a sci fi book fan all my life, I found this to be a classic of that genre. Hubbard's depth of character, story line development and imagery are superb in this saga of the year 3000. It is a desolate picture until the hero, Johnny Goodboy Tyler appears on the scene in his leadership role against the evil Psychlo villain, Terl. Terl has all those qualities we love to hate and hate him we do. But his character is also humorous in his evil ways. The story is a testament to the indominable spirit of man which, as always, gives us hope for the future.
Although the book is massive in size (over 1000 pages), it did not seem to be very long due to its non-stop action. It was a book that was hard to put down.
I highly recommend it if you want a book of substance but something that moves along at a rapid pace.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about...
