Kurzbeschreibung

"Amazing, moving and enlightening. "Bats Sing, Mice Giggle" presents the latest findings on the intimate lives of animals with great elegance. I recommend it wholeheartedly."--Larry King

"Did you know that spiders taste with their feet, that a decapitated cockroach can live for two weeks, that a certain type of parrotfish wraps itself in a sort of foul-smelling snot before taking a nap, and that ants play? I didn't until I read "Bats Sing, Mice Giggle." "--"New Scientist"

"Full of interesting facts . . . presented in a friendly, readable way that will appeal to most young adult and adult readers with an interest in the world around them. The authors discuss a remarkably wide range of topics [in] an easy general-reading text that introduces readers to interesting avenues of scientific research and observation."--"SB&F"

"In the delightful process of discovering the secret skills of our living cousins, so crisply and clearly described in this book, each filled with their quirky spectacular capacities (which we can envy but not duplicate) that sense of our place in the scheme of things has been infused with . . . joyful awe."--Stuart L. Brown MD, Founder and President, The National Institute for Play

"Bats Sing, Mice Giggle" is the culmination of many years of cutting-edge scientific research that reveals how animals have secret, inner lives of which until recently--although animal lovers will have instinctively believed it--we have had little proof.

The authors show how animals communicate; how they warn and help each other in times of danger; how some problem-solve even more effectively than humans; and how they build, create, and entertain themselves and others.

Good Book, Some Errors 5. November 2011
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This book is one that could be considered a good starter volume for anyone who is interestd in the emotional lives of birds and animals, especially as, only a few decades ago, any scientist who maintained that any creature apart from man had emotions, was accused of anthropomorphization creatures that were considered little more than instinct-driven automatons.

Unfortunately, the authors of this book have made some serious errors in the course of their analyses, which should be corrected in a later edition.

On page 128 the author states that organic antifreeze in a frog's cells keep the cells from dehydrating in winter. In reality, this antifreeze keeps ice crystals from forming as these crystals would damage the cells, leading to the animal's death.

On Page 202, there is a statement to the effect that pterosaurs swallowed volcanic rocks or pebbles and used them to spit fire. Neither my scientist friends nor I have ever heard of any such results being published in any scientific papers - such a discovery would be front-page news - so either this statement was meant as a joke, or it is an expression of wishful thinking that dragons could have existed at some time.

Page 228 - Genes do NOT change within a generation - that idea, as once expressed by Lamarck, has long since been discredited. It can happen, though, that genetic variation in a population leads to different genes finding expression under different circumstances, a phenomenon known as genotypic plasticity. Darwin's finches do not "change their beaks." Those that have beaks even marginally better suited to handling the food that is available at a given time will be more successful in raising young, thus handing down their form of beak, which will slowly evolve into the form ideal under the prevailing circumstances... until circumstances shift again, leading to a new round of developments.

These are the main details that should be corrected at some point. Otherwise, the book is a good and entertaining read which anyone, from the beginner to the scientist is sure to enjoy.

Sehr interessantes Buch 6. März 2011

Ich bin durch das Interview der Autorin auf CNN bei "Larry King" auf das Buch aufmerksam gemacht worden. Es ist sehr unterhaltsam, das Buch zu lesen, über ein Themengebiet, das kein alltägliches ist.

Fascinating, loved it!! 4. September 2010
Von Everyday Learner - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Who knew that animal's were capable of such amazing feats. This book blew my mind, all of the animal behavior related to similar states in us humans. Some of it was hilarious - like lizards that do push-ups to impress mates - sure I can relate to that. As a teacher and educator, I found aspects of animal cognition really interesting. How can monarch butterflies use magnetic fields to navigate ... well I won't spoil it, you'll just have to read it. I'm even incorporating sections into my lesson plans so my students can benefit from understanding the animals around them in new ways - and hopefully themselves in new ways too. Great stuff!

Bats Sing, Mice Giggle: The Surprising Science of Animals' Inner Lives reveals startling facts about animals (and a few plants). From mole rats communicating underground to plants sensing our presence, you will be amazed at the heretofore unimagined capabilities of living organisms. Told by two well-qualified Ph.D.'s to a general audience, the many stories in this book are to be treasured and shared.

talking to plants?... 27. Dezember 2010
Von jan - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

All the talk about animals was interesting, but the info about plants was astounding. IT confirms the info in "The Secret Life of Plants", one of my alltime favorites. I have a peach tree that was ringed by a chipmunk. I have been talking to it nicely for months in hopes that it would decide to live. Now I don't feel like such a nut.
