A step in the right direction

This book is far from being all you need to learn to improvise but it is definitely a step in the right direction. Mr. Friedland himself stated that in the book.
If you need a book with scales and formulas this is not for you. Mr. Friedland makes his point through explanation, examples and let you figure out the rest on your own. For every hour you spend reading this book there are 4 hours of study/experiment you must do to take advantage of this material.
The only thing I did not like was the fact that he did not provide answers to some of his own harmony exercices. Some things I could not understand and needed an intructor's help.

The heavy jazz influence in this book but may be a turn-off to the beginner or rock-oriented types like me. But the techniques and methods in the book are useful for any style of music. This is the 5th or 6th book from Ed Friedland that I have used for learning and I haven't come across a dud yet, this book is certainly no exception. I would recommend it to anyone willing to try something outside their comfort zone.
Good for Jazz Enthusiasts but there may be better choices?

I feel Most of What Ed Friedland writes is Very Good and I do have alot of his books but I found other books from him better for improvisation unless you really like Jazz. I don't remember the backing tracks for this product having much of an ensemble if any.
The book I like better is Building Rock Bass Lines: A Solid Foundation for the Rock Bassist. I like the 3 complete tunes at the end to practice what you've learned.
My second choice is Building Walking Bass Lines which was alittle more informative but I liked the backing tracks on Building Rock Bass Lines Better. The concept in both of these books are pretty much the same, but I like the backing tracks better for learning when done in rock or blues than Jazz. I do like Jazz but I found the demonstrations, for me, better with Rock and Blues. I don't believe any of these books have tabulature but the lessons in the latter 2 books are very useful to help you get better with your basslines no matter what type of music you are playing, including Jazz.
