The title says it all: Barry Trotter and the Unnecessary Sequel is Michael Gerber's needless follow-up to Barry Trotter and the Shameless Parody. Who needs a second raucous spoof of Harry Potter? Ask Mr Gerber's publishers and bank manager...

Boy wizard Barry Trotter is now 38 and long married to his over-achieving schoolmate Ermine. With serious hairline problems and two kids (Nigel and Fiona), he's grown quite chummy with his old nemesis Lord Valumart, and is a far cry from the idealised Barry in bestsellers by "JG Rollins":

Not that Barry was a bad fellow--he was always ready to tell a fictitious story, dispense bad advice or lend an inexpert hand. It's just that he was sort of a loose cannon. A very loose, very, very big cannon that fired nuclear-tipped artillery shells. Into heavily populated areas. At dinner time.
Now it's young Nigel's turn to endure "The Obligatory Train-Platform Chapter" and become a first-year pupil at the famous wizarding school Hogwash, while his parents tag along for the old students' reunion. Gerber has fun sending up the lake journey, the banquet, the Sorting (sorry, Picking) Hat and other familiar props.

When the current Headmaster comes to a very messy end, it has to be foul play, probably by the author. Barry unwisely takes over as interim head, while Nigel suffers squalid agonies at the bottom of the Hogwash pecking order. The mystery grows deeper, also ruder and grosser, as Barry himself is cursed with "youthanasia"--doomed to become forever younger until he painfully implodes into nothingness. A badly disguised "stranger" on the Hogwash staff is evidently implicated, but as usual our chums are too busy suspecting Professor Snipe...

The farrago lurches onward until, at last: "This is the part in the book where the villain explains his plan!" En route, Unnecessary Sequel offers more sleaze, innuendo, cheap shots, bad taste and bodily fluids than you could shake a broomstick at. If you enjoyed what Bored of the Rings did to Tolkien, you'll enjoy this as outrageous, irreverent fun. --David Langford -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Kurzbeschreibung

Sequel to the bestselling "Barry Trotter & The Shameless Parody", which has sold almost 200,000 copies in hardback. This return to Hogwash offers more well-observed humour and intricate spoofs. Will appeal to Potter fans and foes alike. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Unnecessary Sequel says it all 16. Dezember 2005
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
To be honest, I stopped reading on page four. For some reason, I was expecting british humour and a decent parody, but could find only lame sound-alike names and moderately funny extensions to the original plot (as much as you can tell after four pages).

I'm not really a HP fan (that's why I got interested in the first place), but HP is at least well written.

In short, I'm disappointed and wouldn't recommend it to any of my friends (and wouldn't even consider it as a gift for someone I don't really like).

Not Just Another Sequel 7. September 2004
Von Bryan Shane - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This parody is much more than a parody. At one point near the middle of the story the plot (if one can discern one) noticeably changes from simple random comedic parody to an independent commentary on prejudice and society which is more hard hitting than either the original of which this a parody or the first installment of which this is a sequel.

Also, it includes a very disturbing, yet pervasive explanation of conjuring as magical stealing of things already manufactured and owned by "Muddles." I remember such an explanation being proferred during an episode of the TV show "Bewitched" when Darin received a new space-age automobile prototype conjured up by a witch relative - which in actuality disappeared from its "mortal" testing facility the very same day initiating a nationwide search. Likewise in Hogwash, everything conjured is, in effect, instantaneously stolen from "Muddles."

It seems that the "Magickals" and the "Muddles" never were able to reconcile their mutual historical hatred for each other and this story comes very close to recounting a "final solution" whose end is the complete extermination of .... Well, you must really read the book. Not just an other sequel.

A Worthy Sequel, if not Entirely up to Snuff 20. Oktober 2003
Von Aggie von S - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Having read Barry Trotter and the Unauthorized Parody and enjoyed it very much, I decided to have a go with the sequel when I chanced upon it in the bookstore, and it was well worth the price I paid for it. Just reading the synopsis on the inner jacket made me laugh out loud. I also really liked the way that they wrote out the (still) Obligatory Legal Mumbo Jumbo, and the disclaimers at the beginning of the book. Still incredibly funny. If you liked the original, you'll probably like the sequel, although bear in mind that it is not using the plot of any Potter novel per se, but it does use elements from the books that are outrageously funny. Pick it up now, you'll love it.

funny & clever 7. Oktober 2005
Von Michael O. Byrd - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
This is the 2nd book in this series I've read and GERBER continues to make me laugh and find clever ways to spoof Harry Potter. You must be a fan of Harry Potter to really enjoy these books or you won't get half the references.

I defninitely recomend this book.
