It had to come. Michael Gerber's Barry Trotter and the Shameless Parody does to Harry Potter what Bored of the Rings did to Tolkien--burying the very English original in showers of quick-fire gags, mangled character names, and Americanisms.
It stuck to the plot of The Lord of the Rings, but--probably for fear of lawsuits--Shameless Parody rambles in all directions, poking fun at JK Rowling's characters, her fans, the worldwide Potter phenomenon and moviemakers Warner Brothers too.
The hero of Barry Trotter and the Philosopher's Scone (in America, Barry Trotter and the Magic Biscuit) is now in his 11th year at Hogwash School for Wizards, aged 22. Yes, he should have left long ago, but being famous is addictive. Now the Headmaster, Alpo Bumblemore, has a fresh task for Barry. Already beset by crowds of non-magical "Muddle" fans, the school faces terminal publicity unless our hero can halt production of the scheduled film Barry Trotter and the Inevitable Attempt to Cash In....
Can Barry, with friends Lon Measly and Ermine Cringer, defeat the latest evil schemes and transparent anagrams of Lord Valumart--even with help from author JG Rollins herself? It doesn't seem to matter much since even the "good" characters tend to be crass, stupid, unsympathetic or all three.
Gerber shrewdly builds on the Hogwarts tradition of icky sweets and should appeal to the young in brain with loving descriptions of Snot Chocolate, Dandruff Babies, Diarrhoea Creams, and the like: "Barry chuckled: for him, potty humour was one of life's most reliable sources of pleasure." Naturally there's not a Chamber but a Chamberpot of Secrets, and the toilet-haunting ghost Moaning Myrtle becomes Flatulent Fanny.
The plot, for want of a better word, is too self-referentially silly to describe. It's a toss-up: will millions of young Rowling fans giggle uncontrollably over the lavatory jokes, or lynch Gerber for blasphemy? --David Langford

Die Parodie auf sämtliche Harry Potter - Romane ist leider äußerst flach geraten. Man merkt sehr deutlich, dass der Autor Amerikaner ist - hintersinniger britischen Humor ist in diesem Buch nicht zu finden, statt dessen jede Menge primitive Witze über alles, was so unter der Gürtellinie liegt.
Der Ausblick auf die Zukunft der Romanfiguren ist von der Idee her ganz nett: "Barry" ist ein stinkfauler, verwöhnter Dauerschüler, sein Freund "Lon" auf dem geistigen Niveau eines fünfjährigen, seit er bei einem Quidditch-Unfall einen Teil seines Gehirns verlor, und "Ermine" ist Lehrerin in einer Schule für "magisch Behinderte".
Soweit ganz spaßig, aber die Geschichte ist bis auf wenige Stellen derart anspruchslos und vorhersehbar, dass das Buch sein Geld wirklich nicht wert ist. Der Autor wollte anscheinend nur aus dem Harry Potter-Hype Profit schlagen, ohne sich wirklich geistig anzustrengen. Der beste Gag ist immer noch das vorgfertigte "Autor-Beschimpfungs-Formular" am Ende des Buches. Echte Fans werden schwer enttäuscht sein.

Es ist unglaublich! Der Versuch, einen Film zu stoppen wird als Film gedreht und zum Schluss ist es dann doch nur ein Drehbuch für einen Film. So oder so ähnlich ist die Essenz des Buches und alles dreht sich um den postpubertären Lieblingshelden Barry Trotter, und die ständige suche nach mehr Geld.
Der Witz steckt auch in den mit viel Liebe ins kuriose verdrehten Namen und Gegebenheiten aus den echten Harry Potter Büchern und kann nur von einem wahren Fan kommen. Sensible Geister sind allerdings nicht gefragt, den es geht hart zur Sache, wenn es um Kritik geht an dem Marketing-Gigantismus, der sich mittlerweile hinter den Markennamen Harry Potter verbirgt. Wer also mal mit der vollen Härte des globalistischen Kapitalismus getrofen werden möchte, der sollte dieses Buch kaufen, kaufen, kaufen...allen anderen kann man nur empfehlen: KAUFT dieses Buch!

Barry Trotter and the Shameless Parody is a great book, it's filled with....general funny stuff!!
Although it is hard to follow, even though it's the 1st Barry Trotter book, it's as though there have been ones before as it refers to things that have happened in the past. Another annoying thing is that every name that was in the normal Harry Potter book has been replaced with a comical name for example:-
Ron Weasly - Lon Measly
Hermione Granger - Ermine Cringer
Snape - Snipe
Gryffindor - Grittyfloor
Lord Voldemort - (My favorite!)....Lord Valumart
etc.
And it's a little more mature than Harry Potter.. so Parents! Read before letting like 7 year olds read

Great parody - for adults only!

Michael Gerber has officially earned a warm fuzzy spot in my heart with his Barry Trotter parody books. Even the obligatory legal text in the front pages is funny!
The Shameless Parody follows Barry in his post-Hogwash years as he tries to come to terms with being an adult with a child of his own in Hogwash -- one that's barely magical at all. Despite being a blatant poke at many facets of the Harry Potter books, it has its own unique storyline filled with challenges and surprises enough to allow it to stand on its own, story-wise. You just don't know how things will turn out for Barry and his friends. The humor in it is downright raunchy at points so I wouldn't suggest this book for anyone under the age of consent but adults who take life too seriously may find the Potty humour a bit offensive. I suppose I'd suggest this book for college students and immature adults like me.

As Good As The Original

Any Harry Potter fan knows the feeling you get when you read an HP book for the first, second, third, 20th time, etc. Though this book is a work of parody, it is extremely affectionate to the original source. The settings are rich(in their own way) and the characters lively. The theme of this book is sort of the idea that the Harry Potter series was once a pure and clean thing, loved by everyone who read the books, but now is a cash cow owned by corporations and that we should all try to look back to what the books really mean, not the standardized travesty that companies have made it into. I think that the crumbling settings and nasty characters in this book are a sort of metaphor, the idea that they were once the pure things of the HP books but are now twisted, lustful things that shouldn't really still exist. I really love this book because of the theme. It definitely touches the source of the HP books and gives you the magical feeling of reading one.
