5.0 von 5 Sternen Accompaniment is fun. 7. November 2011
Von Anne Marie Jackson - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Playing WITH other people is a big part of the joy of playing blues harmonica. This book will help you do that and feel cool in front of your friends and other experienced players.

David Barrett clearly studied the relevant blues songs available. That's a lot of work! And you see the results in how he has classified the elements of accompaniment and chosen examples across a broad range of possibilities. Read this book if you just want to learn about the blues, as a listener. Study it if you are a musician.

Most musicians are not soloing most of the time. Accompaniment is our bread and butter. David Barrett helps you to learn well so that you enjoy every opportunity to do so.

This book is also an important companion to David Barrett's soloing concepts and Improvisation book, as many of the same concepts are part of improvising. After all, you are improvising when you accompany.

Très bon livre sur l'accompagnement à l'harmonica. Questions-réponses avec un chanteur, comment accompagner le chant ou groover sur un morceau, tout est expliqué en détail. Very good book on accompaniment on harmonica. Q & A with a singer, how to accompany singing or groove of a song, everything is explained in details

3.0 von 5 Sternen Caution 4. Januar 2012

Don't pay too much attention to the rating I gave this book. I really haven't begun to work with it. I sat down to see what the book offers. I'm a beginner, more or less. Read the entire review or disregard my review entirely.
-------------------------
Many, many years ago, I played a chromatic harmonica. I played all kindsa tunes by ear. But I had no on to show me where to take it, how to get to the next level. So it got boring quickly.
-----------------------------
After many years, I'm returning to harmonica, but this time to diatonic. I'm not a big blues fan, but what one can learn from blues players easily translates into different genres.
-------------------------------------
What I'm VERY concerned about with this book--and its not so obvious--is that one is expected to own a 10 hole diatonic harmonica in the following keys, if one hopes to follow the book's samples.

G, C, Bb, C, D, F, low F

That's 7 different harmonicas. I'd imagine you could get by with just one of the 2 'F' harps, if you're willing to accept you'll sometimes be off an octave. I'd think it'd still sound pretty good. That still means you need 6 harmonicas. If you're more sophisticated than I, maybe you know how to substitute harmonicas in some cases. I don't know if that'll work or not. Probably it won't in many cases
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're kind of a newbie, like me, consider the fact that, unlike most other instruments, often one needs multiple harmonicas in different keys to get by. As a newbie, you don't have that many harps, most likely.

Wait to purchase this till you've been playing a while. If harmonica is really your thing, you may want this book. There's also an additional consideration for the newbie.

That is: there are more many variations on harmonica tunings. If you love Irish jigs, reels and whatever they call that stuff(not my thing), they have specially tuned harps to accommodate such playing. They're tuned just a bit differently from the standard "Richter" harmonica you should start with. I think that special tuning is called "Paddy Richter".

There are diminished, augmented, Melody Maker, Power Bender, circular tuned, diminished, augmented-tuned harmonicas. There are certainly many more types of tuning than anyone could grasp. But there are reasons to start on the standard harp. And for many/most, the standard tuning is where they belong. Like everything in the world, what you gain with one tuning, may mean a loss of some other ability. Some harmonica tunings are better for playing melodies, some are really great in allowing you to play many chords. Everything in life is a compromise.

Don't buy this book till you're at an intermediate stage or beyond. Some of those other tunings are for those who just wanna play melodies, ie, single notes. Some are so logically constructed that one only needs to learn a couple scales, most of them become nearly identical, really. Circular tuning allows all kindsa chords not possible with standard harp. It'll take a while for you to know your direction. Don't buy this book prematurely.

------------------------------------
What if you're a bit of a newbie, and you were told to start with a 'C' harmonica, and that's pretty much all you've got?

Answer: You're in trouble if you wanna use this book.
-----------------------------------
Maybe this book is a bit beyond me at this point, I won't find out for a while, since I don't have these harmonicas. The book appealed to me because I'm kinda sick off watching people who solo on an instrument. Its better, I think, to play along with others. Do you really think you can play any instrument, even if you play it well, and consistently hog the spotlight? I think not. Who wants to play with such an egotist?
---------------------------------------------------
Take my review with a grain of salt, I really can't use the book at this point--I just don't have all the harmonicas necessary. The idea of the book is great, at least. I can't speak to its execution, but I can warn those who don't have a good collection of harps.
------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT: If I'd simply taken the time to read the cover of the book, it says, "For intermediate and advanced players". Believe it. As a beginner, most books will require you to own a 10 hole diatonic(that means one of those little things, not one of those big-holed things with a push button).

I obviously didn't read carefully. Hopefully, you will.
