Produktbeschreibungen

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4–Narrator Elizabeth Sastre beautifully brings to life the story of three British orphans and their loving caretakers in Noel Streatfield's Ballet Shoes (Random, 1937). Pauline, Petrova, and Posie start life off as carefree children, but when their adopted Great Uncle Max (a.k.a. Gum) disappears on a fossil hunting expedition, the young girls find themselves becoming the breadwinners of the family. As stage performers they are able to give back to the only family they have ever known, and have their own adventures while they're at it. This charming and often humorous story stands the test of time. The strong female characters solve many conflicts on their own. In the end, each girl is also able to choose her own path in life. Sastre gives each character a distinctive voice and conveys the warmth and vivacity of the story, making this a highly enjoyable audiobook.–April Mazza, Wayland Public Library, MA

Kurzbeschreibung

In the tradition of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Little Princess come Noel Streatfeild’s tales of triumph. In this story, three orphan girls vow to make a name for themselves and find their own special talents. With hard work, fame just may be in the stars! Originally published in 1937.

I first read this book when I was nine years old. I must have read it a dozen times more over the next three years. Now, at the age of twenty-seven, I still get misty- eyed when I think of the three incredible, courageous, loving sisters who are the heroines of this book.

Despite the obstacles of being orphaned and taken in by two loving but financially troubled women, the three adopted sisters in this book are given the rare opportunity to attend a prestigous performing arts school. Being brought up in a home where boarders are taken in to help cover expenses, and attending a school where their peers have more material priviledges than they do, the sisters nonetheless capture the hearts of countless people who come to know them, including the reader.

While two of the "Fossil" sisters find that they posses extraordinary performing talents, (one an actress, the other a ballerina) the third, somewhat of a "tomboy" by the standards of the era, finds herself not fitting in quite as well at the performing arts school. Nonetheless, she pushes herself to be the best that she can be, without forgetting about her own desires and dreams.

To live these girls heartaches and happiness with them as they grow and achieve much more than anyone could have imagined is quite an experience. The message of believing in oneself, and treating one's talents for the precious gifts that they are is very strong; as is the message of maintaining one's own identity. The sisters in this novel all posses incredible integrity, and all exhibit incredibly selfless acts in their love for one another.

The three Fossil sisters all do achieve their dreams; Pauline as a famous actress, Posy as a ballerina, and Peterova, years ahead of her time, becomes an aviator. What makes this happy ending more special than most is that these girls were not handed anything to them, but rather they earn their victories through hard work, determination, and sheer will.

I look forward to one day being able to share this extraordinary book with my own children. The morals and messages contianed within the pages are something that I would like my kids to carry with them always. This book is truly a classic, and I would highly recommend it to any child who has a dream, or any parent who wants their child to have one.

This is the fourth Noel Streatfeild-Novel for children I bought. And as a dutiful gran I read all of them first before giving them away and this is by far the most enchanting! Already the start - why these three orphans call themselves "FOSSIL" is hilarious and nudged me to read on and throughout it is witty, wise and friendly, a real good book for my girls! And as they love me reading to them and as English and the British Way of Life is foreign to us, this - as all the Shoe-Books - is a wonderful experience! Just lovely if you hold a child or two in the crook of your arm and read and talk it over...

I am a boy and thus from a boy's perspective shall judge this book. In short I thought it was superb. I loved the characters and thought the bringing together of the characters was very well done. The book truely lead me on a journey of thought and passion which I have not experienced in any other book. Although I have no wish to go in to ballet when I am older it was a real pleasure to speculate on the reactions each of the girls took. I can see why some of the children I teach are so attracted to this book and hope the author continues her fab works
