accurate and informativ: Best one out of three travel guides 25. August 2001

We backpacked Bali for 4 weeks and we found all the important information in this guide. First my husband read the Lonely Planet guide and I read the German Reise Know-How guide (by Rump and Urban) until I had to find out that the information my husband got from the Lonely Planet was much more accurate and reliable. Especially for information about transportation and places to stay the Lonely Planet was the best choice.

I was so excited about my recent trip to Bali that I used 4 guidebooks. Lonely planet was one of the most useful - it pointed out the tourist traps as well as the great spots. Many of the recommendations are more suitable for backpackers than mid range travelers, but the maps are excellent and the coverage of the entire island is good. Bali will not be the most beautiful place you've visited (it is still a third world country)but it will be the most interesting,especially if you work at understanding the culture. I found the Moon Travel Guide,Bali Handbook, published out of Emeryville California to be the best Bali book. It had the most descriptive narrative (over 300 pages) of Bali's culture, history and customs. However, it is not widely distributed, but is worth searching out.

I travelled for 3 weeks in Bali mainly with public transport and found many of the recommended sights were described with humour and accuracy. Of course the information on the prices couldn't be accurate with the Rupiyah floating wildly up and down. the information about Bali's cultural background helped me understand the locals and the places.
