Kurzbeschreibung

Three stories from two brothers and a sister: Will Swardstrom, Paul K. Swardstrom, and Betsy Baker. Each story with its own unique perspective and genre. The only thread connecting them being family ties between the three authors.

The Price of Greatness by Paul K. Swardstrom
What drives a man? Is it simply being a good person, being a family man, or that single dream of greatness that runs through us all? What if we could have the chance to go back? What is the price of greatness?

Flutter by Betsy Baker
Treasure these moments...children change so fast. What would one mother do when the changes her daughter is going through aren't so...normal?

A Whimper by Will Swardstrom
At a certain point, human evolution and technology merge, but at what cost? How far will we go before the end is the inevitable conclusion?

this is a surprising collection of stories. Not surprising that they're well-written, or that they deal with possibilities of "If". But because the stories go beyond the words and touch you on a human level.
I don't like to spoil, but I will say the one that affected me the most was Flutter. It was so much the solid maternal motivation story. The process is gradual and as it happens, you think its going one way, then it goes another. It was a comfortable ride in a soft leather seat along the things fantastical and as normal as buttons.
The price of greatness was a sense of both loss and the finding of a different thing one didn't know one was searching for.
A whimper was a cautionary tale told circuitously, and a little too late, which made it all more poignant.

My only criticism -- it was too short of a book, I wanted more stories.

I feel I must protest. I read every page of this book, and not once did I find any recipes or any discussion of baking. I was looking forward to hearing how swords figured into this type of baking, picturing those little plastic swords that are used as swizzle sticks. I thought there might be cake decorating or something. Well, somebody messed up and left that part out.

Now, I did find three great stories to read, and really enjoyed that. Three stories, three authors, three separate plots, with very different characters in each story. I don’t like spoilers, so I won’t talk about the stories. All three are well-written, contain a little food for thought, and have actual endings. None of those cliffhangers, and no vague almost-endings that just stop. I liked that. I liked everything about the book, really.

But there are no recipes. And no swords. I thought you should know that.

I'm a fan of Mr Swardstrom and I got to read an advance copy of Baking With Swords. Three short stories, all well written-it seems that talent runs deep in this family.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Remarkable! 2. Juni 2014

The Swardstroms are remarkably talented, with creepy imaginations. I loved each of these stories and I look forward to reading more from them.

Paul Swardstrom - The Price of Greatness is a story of Max’s conflict between the responsibility to those he loves and his own desires. The author reveals that how a hard-working ordinary life can compete with aspirations. I enjoyed this tale, I think you will too.

Betsy Baker - Flutter is about a mother and her daughter’s very unusual affliction. A fresh story with wonderful detail. I was fascinated, and did not get sad until the end.

Will Swardstrom – A Whimper is a warning of our obsession with social media and technical advances. By the third paragraph I was vested in this story. I enjoy the how the author pulls you in, walks you through the events and surprises in the end. Wonderful story.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The title of this collection, Baking With Swords, peaks one's curiosity about the content. 2. Juni 2014

As I began the first short story, The Price of Greatness, I got familiar with the characters, which seemed to come from days gone by. I enjoyed the sweetness between Lila, little Jak and Max. Since I am a romantic, I was hoping that Lila and Max would have a future, but you will find that is not necessarily the end result, as "Greatness comes with a price".
In reading the second short story, Flutter, my attention was immediately drawn at the first sentence and I had to keep reading. You will need to read this short story to find out about Adele's strange affliction and how the author's imagination shows Adele's transformation. I see a parallel of Adele's mother and how many parents may feel when their children leave the nest and go off in the world on their own.
The final short story, A Whimper, takes today's technology news and adds imagination. In many ways, it is disturbing as the author describes how technology will dominate our lives even more than is the case today. A Whimper is worth a read and is a quick story to cause your mind to think.
I find all the stories enjoyable and thought provoking and recommend to all, as they will appeal to a variety of readers.
