College-educated women over 30 are more likely to be killed by a terrorist than to marry. Working women enjoy their careers at the expense of their children's welfare. If you're female, you can't really have it all. So go the modern myths that were born in the 80's, despite the era's supposedly ``liberated'' image, and that have terrorized American women ever since. The trouble, claims Faludi, is not only that the myths aren't true, but that through deliberate action or passive collusion the government, media, and popular culture have ensured their overpowering influence on the public. Her interest sparked by her discovery that the Harvard-Yale marriage-for-women-over-30 study was based on very shaky methodology, but that there was resistance in both the media and government to correcting its conclusions, Faludi went on to uncover the unacknowledged but frighteningly widespread backlash against feminism that has taken place under the surface of 80's careerism. This is such a wonderfully researched and recounted book and, with "The Beauty Myth", got me into feminism. In chapter after chapter, Susan Faludi takes the way we have thought things are and turned them around to show what was really going on behind the scenes. Her writing style is very personally engaging. The chapter on "Fatal Attraction" has stayed in my mind for the 5 years since I first read the book. My favourite book of non-fiction.

I must disagree with a former reviewer that Faludi is anti-male; in Backlash, she describes what has gone awry in how women are perceived and judged, which is detrimental to both women AND men. She identifies countless barriers to equality and the ability of women to make aware choices of the lives they want to live. Again, both women and men will benefit from considering her points, as the myths and skewed notions Americans often have about gender hinder both sexes. Backlash is must-read for all people concerned about how social justice and gender intersect!

Another Masterpiece by Faludi 18. M�rz 2000

Obviously this book created quite a stir by the looks of all the whining and crying by men and women on this page. You know it will hit a cord when it makes a whole bunch of people feel that insecure. This book is great, informative and another great piece of feminist literature. For all you feminists out there, male or female...it is a must that you read this book at least once.
