Listening to Paul Reiser "read" the unabridged audiocassette version of Babyhood is a lot like attending a private performance of a one-man stand-up comedy show--without the hecklers. In his quintessential New York accent, the Mad About You star speaks directly to his audience in a conversational, fast-paced, and spirited voice. Of course, the subject matter is babies--those that are still a twinkle in their parents' eyes, those growing in their mother's bellies, and those that have emerged from the womb, ready to test their parents' new-found skills with every change of the diaper.

Reiser shares insights into a host of subjects that one doesn't necessarily consider when approaching parenthood. For instance, while attending a barbecue party, he finds himself discussing body parts and body functions not usually tossed around with strangers. "I certainly understand in theory that if you're going through an event as universal and wondrous as childbirth, and especially if you're having difficulties, there is benefit in sharing. But the reality is I ... I don't feel like discussing my genitalia with anybody." Reiser's enthusiasm for his subject is apparent, which makes for a humorous foray into the magical world of Babyhood. (Running time: 200 minutes, four cassettes) -- Colleen Preston

Kurzbeschreibung

I'm going to be totally honest.  This is not the kind of audiobook that can help you.  It's not a "how-to," a "when-to," or a "what-to-expect."  It's not even endorsed by anyone remotely connected to the medical profession.  (Although a cousin of mine who sells carpeting to doctors' offices not only found it "insightful" and "informative," but felt that, "if properly vacuumed, it should last a lifetime.")

"A fine endorsement," you say.  "But if I have only one audiobook to buy, shouldn't I go for the helpful one?"

Let's compare:

Those "know-it-all" books tell you how to have a happy, healthy pregnancy.  My book mentions a squirrel.

Those books tell you how to care for a newborn child.  My book describes how tired I am.

Those books give you essential information you can use in a life-threatening emergency.  My book has some very amusing anecdotes about poop.

So really, it's up to you.

If you want to be prepared and well-informed, I understand.  But if you enjoy hearing the words "pterodactyl" and "uterus" in the same book, you've come to the right place.

Kudos to Mr. Reiser 28. Oktober 1999

I'd never really liked Mr. Reiser before and his television show left me cold. But my good friend Jeff , who's taste I trust, told me that I had to read this book. He said it was totally phoenomenal and really not that expensive (which it wasnt).

Oh God..what a revelation. I couldn't put the book down. As I lay in bed, next to my lovely wife Laura, I almost felt guilty starting this book. But the upon reading the "Universal truths #2...Expecting father shalt let himself go and grow a beard. Heh heh... I couldnt help but laugh uncontrolably. So much so, that my wife had me read the book out loud. We were up till 3 AM laughing hysterically.

Thank you Mr. Reiser, for bringing a little laughter into our household.

Wohl nur für Eltern 30. November 2001

Format:Taschenbuch
Ein Buch hauptsächlich für Väter und Mütter. Paul Reiser schildert erheiternd das neue Leben mit einem Kind. Für Singles und nicht-Eltern gibt es wohl leider nur wenige Lacher zu verbuchen. Trotzdem nett.

It is that good. Paul Reiser is just awesome. He makes you laugh and laugh. I had a 4 hour layover at an airport and I read it all in one sitting. And everyone around me was wondering what was so funny and why I had a smile frozen on my face. Topics just hit you hard! And you can relate to every situation he talks about. Anyone can enjoy it but Parents really can get a hysterical laugh. You will honestly laugh out loud on every page. EVERY PAGE! I did and I have read it 3 time. Couplehood is great too! Don't hesitate...Buy them both today. You will NOT regret it.

Babyhood isn't just about babies.
What's so wierd about this book is that you can relate it to anything in your life. I mean, who hasn't said to someone, "You're such a baby" or "Don't be such a... Lesen Sie weiter...

Shame on you Mr. Reiser sir.
I just don't get it, why can't people tell some jokes in a book for a change? You know, a guy walks into a bar sort of stuff. Now that's funny. I don't like baby jokes. Lesen Sie weiter...
