4.0 von 5 Sternen Good supplement for owner's manual 23. November 2010
Von John H. Walker - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
People who write about Bromptons seem to have one quality in common, unexpected for mechanically-oriented authors: they're decent writers. Even the Brompton owner's manual is clear and succinct, and Henshawe's combination of a history of the company and supplemental hints about managing a Brompton makes for useful and even enjoyable reading. Did you know, for example, that your partially-folded Brompton can be used as a seat while you're waiting for your train? Or that the most common mistake made in removing a rear wheel is taking out the set-screw in the chain tensioner? My only complaint is that neither book stands alone. Both assume that their readers are cult members, and know a quite a lot about Bromptons already. I bought Henshawe to get a more thorough treatment than the manual affords of procedures to repair and care for my new bike, but found that he doesn't bother to incorporate information from the manual. So, I need to have both books open when I do any work. Still, worth a Brompton owner's time.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Good but not great 1. März 2012
Von krirk - Veröffentlicht auf
This is basically the book about the origin of the Brompton. Described almost every single important moment of the bicycle and the inventor's life (even his predecessors!)
The author focused on the early life of the bike so the story of the bike and the company after year '00 are very little.
It's entertaining to read the history about them but when it comes to the technical aspects of the bike, it's not good enough. The author is quite biased to the Brompton (understandable of course, it's a Brompton book!).

The reason I rated this just 3 stars mainly because the quality of the book itself. There's no margin, no paragraph on the page, full text from top left to the bottom right. This is really difficult to read. The artwork is high-school level and should have had more pictures correlate to the story as well. I have read "Spaceframe Moultons" by Tony Hadland recently, it's in the same genre but Tony is better in writing techniques and in terms of detail of the bike.

If you are the fan of the Brompton, it's worth reading it! it's the only choice!

I was worried that this was going to seem dated. It's not. Lots of very recent information. Very enjoyable read for anyone interested in learning more about Bromptons or other folding bicycles.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent Detailed History of Brompton's Plus +++ 11. Juli 2012

This book provides an excellent review of the history of the Brompton, plus it offers tips on using and maintaining the Brompton, and it provides details on how the Brompton is made. Therein lies the difference between 'any-old' mass-manufactured folder, and the Brompton.

The Brompton is hand-manufactured to customer specifications. I like that. In addition, the book also provides pictures to back up the details.

If you are a collector of folders, this book provides Brompton Frame Serial Numbers in the Appendix, providing a range of frame numbers, and approximate date of manufacture -- very very helpful. In another portion of the Appendix, it gives you Profit and Sales Figures from 1987 forward.

Given our global economy, and the deterioration of our environment, added to increased fuel costs, I'm betting Brompton's sales begin to sky-rocket shortly. Too bad it isn't listed on the New York Stock Exchange -- because it would probably be another winner like

Owning a Brompton, and having tried other, lesser folders, I speak from experience when I say this is a luxury machine, well worth its price.

Through reading this book, you come to understand why that quality IS STILL IN the Brompton -- and it is nice to know that the term 'quality workmanship' and 'repeat customer business' and 'ethical treatment of customers' are terms that still mean something, to some companies. (See page 107, 2nd edition).

Nice work on the author's part. An excellent topic -- Bromptons!
