Deutsch lesen geht gut, aber schreiben ist eine andere Sache...
I bought the book to get an overview of the BMW GS models. Instead, the book explains all motorcycles since 1948 or something. It was fun to read, how motorcycles evolved into what they are now. And then, as a side product, some team develops the BMW R80 G/S. It wins the Paris Dakar several times and it becomes a hit! BMW did not expect it, but they were right in time with this new bike! The bike that was chanceless suddenly won all races... Mainly because it was a beemer...
In the 80's I drove a BMW R80 ST (street version of the G/S) and I must say: this was a GREAT bike! And that's also the message of the book: the R80G/S changed BMW and it also changed the world of motorcycles. BMW took the lead, with outstanding technology and quality. Always doing things THEIR way. The book is very clear in this.
Lots of attention is spent on the people who actually DID these things. The book is in fact a tribute to the G/S design and even more to the people that MADE the G/S as good and tough as it was.
The pictures in the book are great. Sharp. Colourfull. The texts are clear, but not simple. This was a fun book to read. Not only because my current motorcycle (R1150 GS) is the star in the last chapters...
Can I recommend the book? YES. But only if you are an engineer or simply love the beemers. If you ride a Transalp you may learn some things and you may like the pictures, but the spark only flies when you own the ignition keys of a true GS.
