Four women. Two years. A friendship to last a lifetime.

The only things that Sharita, Thursday, Risa, and Tammy have in common are their disastrous love lives. But the year three of them turn 30 will be different, they swear!

Sharita, a plump and conservative accountant wants to make partner at her firm and find the man of her dreams. Thursday, the daughter of a formerly chart-topping political rapper, wants to stop being a serial one-month stander, and settle down into a stable life with a stable boyfriend. Risa, a skinny and audacious electronica punk rocker, wants to finally land an album deal, which she feels is the only way to win back the heart of her on-again of off-again closeted girlfriend. And after getting fired as the spokesmodel for her family’s hair company, sweet and gorgeous Tammy wants to prove that she has what it takes to make it on her own.

None of these women get what they want, but over the course of two years, they get exactly what they need. And that proves to be the best thing after all.

The title is somewhat misleading. Sure, each chapter begins with great advice on relationships, but the real story is about strong women - 3 Smithies plus one - and their very real, enduring love and friendship. Their individual and collective strength evolves out of their weaknesses. Sounds like real life? I sure wish that I had such amazing friends. But now that I think about it, perhaps I do. Read this book. It will enrich your life.

5.0 von 5 Sternen As awesome as the title suggests! 25. September 2013

I know it will throw some people who see it and automatically assume that it's another self-help book for women written by the latest Twitter dating guru. It so is not. Remember Davie Jones from 32 Candles? Well she's back in a lesser role as the author of said self-help book. You know how awesome Davie is (remember her invitation to crazy line?), so just imagine the kind of advice she gives.

Why do I love Ernessa's writing so much and why should you buy this book as soon as you finish this review? Because we all have friends just like the people she writes about. She doesn't create worlds so ridiculous that no one can imagine actually living in them. And her characters are multidimensional and human.

Though only one of the women claims to be looking for love, in actuality, all four of them are. Sharita is a by the book accountant whose professional life is on track, but her love life fell off the rails a long time ago. She hates stepping out of her comfort zone and will find every excuse to avoid social gatherings, so when she does meet a man (most likely at work or the grocery store), she goes ghost on her friends, only to reappear when things don't work out. I could write a book on people like that, and if you think about it, you have a friend just like that. Or maybe you're that friend, I'm not judging you (yes, I am).

Thursday is the queen of one month stands. Right, not one night stands, one month stands. This love them and leave them queen can attract men like bees to honey, she just doesn't want to keep them. As soon as it seems like the men are catching feelings, she gives them the old heave ho. When Davie's book falls into her lap, coupled with a recurring dream about a mysterious man, she begins to think that she might finally be ready to settle down with the one.

Risa is a hot mess. When I first started reading about her, I immediately thought of Lynn from Girlfriends. Risa doesn't mooch off of her friends like Lynn, but she is determined to make it as a musician. Her budding career was stunted before, but she has a plan to make a comeback. All of her friends think she's out of her mind, but Risa knows that if she becomes the rock star she's meant to be, The One will come back to her.

While Sharita, Thursday and Risa are all friends from college, Smith College to be exact (Ernessa's alma mater), Tammy joined the group after the trio relocated to Los Angeles. Readers will remember Tammy from 32 Candles as James Farrell's younger sister who tormented Davie Jones in high school. Tammy is the character that we know the least about, but we do know that Davie is now her sister-in-law. Most of the focus of the book is on the other three ladies, with Tammy kind of flitting about the perimeter as she tries to learn to love herself, but when she steps into the story, she does so in a big way.

At 494 pages, it seems like this could be a long read, but it's really not. Carter's writing has a way of pulling you in and not letting you go, so the pages fly right by. No one's story line is predictable and I promise you'll find yourself talking to the characters at times. I absolutely loved this book and can guarantee that I'll be re-reading it soon.

5.0 von 5 Sternen I didn't think I would like it, but this is a AWESOME novel --Especially appropriate for your book club! 27. September 2013

I bought THE AWESOME GIRL'S GUIDE for one reason - I absolutely raved about 32 CANDLES, the author's first novel. I loved 32 CANDLES so much that I am still recommending it, and I have given out at least 5 copies as gifts. I never read a plot synopsis of THE AWESOME GIRL's GUIDE, so I didn't know exactly what to expect. I just knew I would support this author in any endeavor, and pre-purchased this book for my Kindle.

So imagine my surprise when I was reading AWESOME GIRL"S GUIDE and I came to realize I could not relate to ANY of the characters. I didn't even like them! I have to say, I DO NOT have friends like these girls! (If I do, they are keeping secrets!)I was not so lost or confused when I was 28, 29, 30, etc. So I was a little impatient and intolerant of their rather glaring flaws. I kept waiting to like Sharita, Risa, Thursday, and it just wasn't happening. Instead, I kept thinking that they are all crazy! Not "they are different from me and I don't share their life view" crazy. I mean, I thought they were "these chicks need therapy" crazy. And I could not imagine where a novel about four young women in need of such psychological help was going to take me. I wasn't even sure I cared what would happen to Risa - I am rather unamused by foul-mouthed lesbian rockstars. I was thinking, "oh no! I am not going to like Mrs. Carter's novel!"

But I am writing this review because I was WRONG WRONG WRONG! I was about 40 percent through the novel when this little light started to come on, and I started to see the women as complicated women, as opposed to characters. By the time I hit the halfway point, I pretty much abandoned any thought of returning to the tedium of my day job. I spent the rest of the day reading the book under my desk. I laughed and cried by the end. And like any good story, it kind of changes you. And I wish I had a friend to discuss it with. As a result, I will be messaging a few friends, telling them, "hurry up and read this one, you've never read anything like it, and I really want to know what you think."

Somewhere underneath, all of us want the same thing, no matter how "screwed up" we are. We want jobs that don't kill our spirits. We want friends. And we want CRAZY LOVE. The other stuff varies, but this stuff seems to be universal. And that's the feeling I had when I finished this novel. I had more in common with these women than I thought. Just like they had more in common with each other than they originally realized. (I loved Sharita and Risa's discussion toward the end.) They could only judge each other up to a certain point.

I haven't decided if I love this book in the same way that I loved 32 CANDLES. Not that I really related to Davie's experience either (btw, Davie does make a guest appearance in this new work.) But it had a more immediate appeal. These girls are damaged in a different way. As I think it through, my conclusion is that THAT'S THE POINT! Black women looking for love are damaged in different ways. This is Sharita, Risa, Thursday, and Tammy's story.

And it's a good story. Makes me want to join a book club again!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Worth the wait and just as amazing as 32 Candles 12. Oktober 2013

Anything I write here would not do this book justice. Ernessa T. Carter has done it again! She has crafted a novel full of complex, dynamic characters that are so very rich and so very flawed and so beautifully human... I can't imagine a reader getting through the first chapter without laughing and becoming fully invested in seeing how this wonderful story of female friendship ends up. As I read it, I kept telling my husband, "it's like Waiting to Exhale 2.0." It's way better because while these women are looking for love the quest hasn't taken over their lives. And even when tragic things happen to them, they are not tragic. When love finds these girls and also when we find out who they love it makes for some damn good "edge-of-your-seat" reading... And Ernessa T. Carter of course brings her trademark love of romantic comedies to bear in the novel and flips those rom/com tropes in really good ways. I'm telling you somebody needs to option this and make it and 32 Candles into movies. This book will make you laugh and cry... sometimes at the same time! I don't often go back and re-read books, but I already know I'll be re-reading this one. This is a keeper.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A worthy follow up to 32 Candles 24. September 2013
Von Carleen Brice - Veröffentlicht auf
At first glance this seems to be a book only about women's friendships, and it is about that, but the further you read, the trickier the plot gets and more is revealed. I laughed at some of the characters and cried with some of them. Goes at a fast clip and very, very enjoyable! If you haven't read her first novel 32 Candles, do read it first. This isn't a sequel, but it does have some of the same characters in it, and you'll get a kick out of seeing how they end up.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A favorite. 4. Oktober 2013

The Awesome Girl's Guide to Dating Extraordinary Men leapt into one of my favorite books of 2013. When I saw it on twitter, I thought the title odd but bought it immediately without question because 32 Candles had previously been one of my favorites. Ms. Carter writes.

Immediately I became immersed in the characters and their lives and the languid, luscious way the story unfolded. Immediately we were given sketches of who Thursday, Risa, Sarita and Tammy were but we were allowed to see and feel them in peeled back layers of great storytelling.

I loved that the women were flawed and still friends and when secrets were revealed that the other friends weren't privy to I felt the betrayal. Their love relationships were also a complicated mix that I found delightful to explore and get to know the reasons behind them. There are also wonderful backstory characters and family members.

I highly recommend this book to all who love great storytelling with unique and flawed characters. These women will touch you and make you care for them while sometimes becoming exasperated at them. It's also a glorious 494 pages.
