Amazon.de

Avenger is the latest international thriller by Frederick Forsyth, who needs no introduction: his past bestsellers in this vein include The Day of the Jackal and The Odessa File.

The avenger is Calvin Dexter, outwardly a small-town US lawyer, who was shaped into a formidable killing machine by Vietnam. There are horrific flashbacks to his war career as a "Tunnel Rat", fighting the Vietcong at close quarters in their own deadly underground labyrinths. After taking the law into his own hands for a bitter personal revenge on a Central American mobster, Dexter hires out his expertise to grab untouchable criminals from safe havens and deliver them into the clutches of US justice.

His latest assignment is the toughest of all. A young American aid worker in fractured Yugoslavia met a revolting death at the hands of an ethnic-cleansing squad led by a Serbian war criminal. The boy's billionaire grandfather can afford an expensive revenge, but the trail seems cold... until, step by step, face-to-face investigation, lucky breaks, unstinting bribery and advanced computer hacking techniques trace the links from Serbia to the United Arab Emirates, a private plane, and a corrupt banana republic where the now very rich villain has the president and secret police on his payroll. Assaulting his massively guarded fortress--whose layers of defence include piranha, attack dogs and sharks deliberately given a taste for blood--would be one hell of a job even if Dexter had surprise on his side. But there are complications in high places. The CIA wants to use that Serbian killer as a stalking-horse in an elaborate operation against Al Qaeda, and issues an urgent warning that the avenger is coming...

Dexter plans an elegant, witty and almost bloodless coup, a sting in the style of Leslie Charteris's Saint rather than a Bond-type frontal assault. With the whole country mobilised against him, though, what chance does he have? Dexter, and Forsyth, may surprise you. The author has a knack for making background information vitally interesting: potted life histories of the characters (including big wheels in the FBI and CIA) are almost as compulsively readable as the major action scenes. Surprises and unmaskings continue until the final pages of this superior thriller. --David Langford

5.0 von 5 Sternen THE BEST FORSYTH BOOK YET! 22. Dezember 2003
Format:Taschenbuch
I have always been a big fan of Frederick Forsyth and "Avenger" must be his best book since "Day of the Jackal".

It is 1995 and Ricky Colenso is working as an aid volunteer in war-torn Yugoslavia. He is ambushed one day by Serbian thug Zoran Zilac and his gang and is eventually brutally murdered. Fast forward to 2001 - the US Government is unwilling to extradite Zilac for Colenso's murder as Zilac is secretly helping the US Government to kill Osama Bin Laden. Colenso's rich grandfather vows to mete out revenge himself by hiring a mercenary known as the "Avenger", a former US Special Forces commando in Vietnam, to capture Zilac and bring him to the US for trial. What follows is a meticulous account of how the Avenger prepares for the snatch from a heavily fortified island to bring Zilac to justice, while at the same time being hindered every step of the way by the CIA who is determined to protect Zilac to get to Bin Laden. Oh and by the way, the ending will blow your socks off. The story twist to end all other story twists! I highly recommend this book! Get it right now! It is worth any price if you love a good read. My business ground to a halt for two days because I couldn't stop reading this book!

3.0 von 5 Sternen good but not great 21. Oktober 2004
Format:Taschenbuch
Avenger is a passable novel by Frederick Forsyth. The story has all the necessary ingedients for a fast paced thriller, which it is once you've read through the first half of the book. That part is dedicated to the "description" of the main characters and the background of the story. In fact, it is a tour de force through the histories of the Second World War, the Vietnam War and the Balkan wars of the 1990s. Forsyth's narrative is cynical but entertaining. Still, the actual story doesn't really take off until about page 150. After that it rolls on nicely in a bantering style like you would expect from a Forsyth novel, though the story remains somewhat predictable.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Genialer Krimi - Forsyth at his best!! 1. Dezember 2009
Von Mike
Format:Taschenbuch
In my opionion Forsyth's best thriller yet. Intelligent plot and story unfolding. Thoroughly researched and absolutely credible. Keeps you spellbound from the first through to the last page.

For perspective, I also enjoy Ken Follett, Robert Harris, and John Le Carre. If you like them, you will like Forsyth too. And if you like Forsyth, you will love "Avenger"!

Also, unlike the Bantam editions which are cheap and of awful print quality, this Corgi edition is clean and neat, a visual pleasure complementing the engaging story.

Finally, I absolutely cannot understand some of the low ratings and comments. Whoever doesn't like thrillers set in a background of the Bosnia or Vietnam wars, should simply not buy this book, and not blame the author for choosing the subject, especially since Forsyth is by no means embellishing any aspect of the war, nor is he taking a political position.
