Henry VIII ascended the throne as a vigorous and handsome youth. The story of his long, turbulent reign is well documented, and many authors have used it as background for novels. But George takes a different tack than most in this first novel by telling Henry's story from his own perspective. We are given an intimate view of how it must have felt for Henry to grow up under the influence of a dour father and a frail, distant mother. When he becomes king we watch as his exuberant, trusting nature slowly turns sinister and cruel. Interspersed with Henry's words are comments by his fool, Will, a man who loved his master, served him faithfully, but saw clearly his failings. Although I initially balked at starting on this lenghty novel, written in old-fashioned English and interspersed with words no longer in use, I wholly enjoyed the book. Bearing in mind that this is not actually an autobiography but a novel, I kept checking historical details on the allknowing web. The hard facts turned out to be accurate, which gave me the pleasant feeling that as a side effect I had also brushed up on my knowledge of history.
I have a great deal of respect for M. George, who managed to write an entertaining and well researched novel in wonderful prose.

Henry VIII - das ist doch der mit den 6 Frauen, oder? Ja, stimmt, aber dieser König hat in seiner für damailige Verhältnisse langen Amtszeit noch deutlich mehr Geschichte geschrieben. Dieses Buch stellt einem unterhaltsam, ausführlich und weitgehend an den geschichtlichen Fakten orientiert, die persönliche und politische Seite dieses Mannes vor, die Geschichte seines Lebens, zwischendurch kommentiert von seinem Hofnarren und Vertrauten, anhand seines Tagebuches, und bringt dem Leser damit zugleich die damalige Denkweise nahe. Faszinierend.

Margaret George has proven herself to be one of the best historical fiction writers of our day. This novel soars; one experiences all the highs and lows of King Henry VIII's life. From his birth as a 'mere second son' to his death, you are transported to Tudor England. Although some of the interpretations of controversial issues are ones with which the informed historian may disagree, as a novel it makes no pretense of representing definitive fact. A novel at its best leaves one with a thirst for more- be it a continuation or a deeper understanding and knowledge of its subject matter. This book does that with impressive aplomb. It is an enrapturing indulgance, and the time spent between its covers is time well spent.
