Kurzbeschreibung

Sex pervades our culture, going far beyond the confines of the bedroom into the workplace, the church and the media. Yet despite all the attention and even obsession devoted to sex, human sexuality remains confusing and even foreboding. What, after all, is authentic human sexuality?

That is the question Judith and Jack Balswick set out to answer in this wide-ranging and probing book. Informed by sociology, psychology and theology, the Balswicks investigate how human sexuality originates both biologically and socially, lay groundwork for a normative Christian interpretation of sexuality, show how authentic sexuality is necessarily grounded in relationships, and explore such forms of "inauthentic sexuality" as sexual harassment, pornography and rape.

Since its first publication in 1999, Authentic Human Sexuality has established itself as a standard text at numerous colleges and seminaries. While maintaining the book's overall structure, this new paper edition offers updated discussions and bibliographies throughout, including a completely new chapter on sexual development throughout the human lifespan and a substantially revised chapter on sexual beings in relationship that incorporates a trinitarian theological perspective.

A new generation of students, pastors, psychologists and sociologists engaged in counseling will be indebted to the Balswicks for this updated study of this endlessly fascinating and perplexing facet of human identity.

Der Verlag über das Buch

A comprehensive Christian appraisal of human sexuality.
Sex pervades our culture, going far beyond the confines of the bedroom and spilling over into the workplace, the church and the media. Yet despite all attention and even obsession devoted to sex, human sexuality remains confusing and even foreboding.

Authentic Human Sexuality will prove an important work for ministers, psychologists, sociologists and students searching for an up-to-date and wise introduction to an essential--and endlessly fascinating and perplexing--facet of human identity.

"Few contemporary issues can generate as much heat and conflict as those having to do with human sexuality. Just when the Christian church is becoming more vocal in affirming a biblical standard of sexual relationships, reports show that 3 out of 4 single adults will engage in sexual intercourse before they reach age twenty, 1 in 2 will cohabit before marriage and 25 percent of men and 15 percent of women will have already engaged in extramarital sex. Controversy continues over homosexuality, including debates over causation, legitimization and the ability to change orientation. Easy access to pornography on the Internet is a serious problem, accompanied by an ever-increasing bombardment of other pornographic materials and increased reports of sexual addiction even in the Christian community. Perhaps most disturbing of all are the high rates of uninvited and nonconsensual sex that are reported, especially by women, ranging from sexual harassment to sexual abuse, rape and other violent sex crimes.

"At the heart of the issue is a contemporary struggle to define the meaning of human sexuality. Most needed, we believe, is a forthright and clearly articulated affirmation by the Christian community of the biblical meaning of sexuality. In this book we integrate evidence from biological, psychological and sociocultural factors with a biblical perspective in order to define and identify authentic human sexuality." from the introduction

Judith and Jack Balswick have given us the gift of their combined years of academic and clinical practice, as well as their experience teaching, with regard to one of the most difficult subjects Christians face: human sexuality.

What makes the subject difficult is not the objective anatomy and physiology; it's the two-thousand years of cultural conditioning and unease with sexuality in general that make most Christians uncomfortable. The authors strive to integrate current medical, psychological, and sociological research with Christian teachings and ethics, and I think they succeed. Research summaries and findings are timely and broad in scope, and the authors provide an excellent, extensive bibloigraphy.

The authors address every "hot topic" sensitively, but head-on. From premarital sex to homosexuality to sexual abuse, they offer rational and scientifically-valid propositions, and then examine these in the light of how the very basic Christian teachings and values will affect the reader's perceptions and actions. They don't tell the reader, "You should believe and act like this" -- rather, they offer a continuum of possible responses, and offer the reader guidance in following his own conscience and faith.

It is not (as I had feared with another of the authors' books) simply a faux-conservative diatribe, full of "thou shalt not"s, but a theologically-sound, pastorally-sensitive resource for clergy and laity, families and clinicians.

Highly recommended for all Christian readers.

Adequate, but not Outstanding 25. Juli 2008
Von Will Jerom - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Three and a half stars. This is a good, but not outstanding book on Christian approaches to sexual ethics. It is not heavily dogmatic, and actually reads much more like sociology than theology in most places. It integrates sociological, and psychological findings with their Biblical analysis, which seem fairly mainstream. They try to represent a diversity of opinions, and succeed modestly well enough, I should say. For those in need of a text that seems fairly middle-of-the-road and addressed the issue of Christian responses to the complex topic of human sexuality, this book should serve that purpose well. At some places they hold back too much on their own conclusions, and could have offered more. Students should find it a fair and comprehensive read, however.

Excellent Christian Approach to Sexuality 12. März 2011

I loved this book. It primarily approaches the topic from an academic point of view using psychology, sociology and scientific principles-- it reads like a textbook most of the time-- but it also has a solid God-centered foundation. I didn't find it to be particularly preachy on any one topic. Compared to most of the other Christian sex books out there, this book is fantastic, well-rounded, and highly informed.

The chapter on Authentic Sexuality was my favorite and helped me so much; it really answered a lot of questions about sexuality and sexual expression for Christians and how it relates in relationship to God. It also goes into why sexual repression started in the Church and the effects it's had on many Christians, as well as a very in-depth discussion on how inauthentic sexuality affects us all, including abuse and addiction. Overall I found the whole book to be well-written and incredibly useful for my personal application.

It should be noted that this book isn't perfect; there are some minor typos throughout and some of the information felt slightly incomplete to me. I would have liked them to go more in-depth into masturbation; it's touched on in a few places in the book, but ultimately only really devotes one or two pages to it towards the end. It also can be a little tedious-- as I said, it reads like a textbook. But even still, I think all Christians who've grown up with distorted perspectives on sexuality (and that's quite a few of us, sadly) should ready this book.

This book is especially good for parents to understand their child's sexual development!! I also recommend "Naked and Not Ashamed" for those looking to explore a healthy Christian perspective on sexuality.

To be authentic in our sexuality means that we affirm the sexual in ourselves as an integral part of our total being. In this way we embrace what God has created and declare with God, "It is very good!" (Gen 1:31). "e;
