The best brief account of the Auschwitz experience available (The New York Review of Books)

When the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944, they sent virtually the entire Jewish population to Auschwitz. A Hungarian Jew and a medical doctor, Dr. Miklos Nyiszli was spared from death for a grimmer fate: to perform "scientific research" on his fellow inmates under the supervision of the infamous "Angel of Death": Dr. Josef Mengele. Nyiszli was named Mengele's personal research pathologist. Miraculously, he survived to give this terrifying and sobering account of the terror of Auschwitz.

This new Penguin Modern Classics edition contains an introduction by Richard Evans.

I was very thankful for the insight provided by Dr. Nyiszli, and horrified at the experiences he accounted for. I wrote a term paper using this book as a resource. Unfortunately Dr. Nyiszli has proven to be a very trustworthy source to recount holocaust fact. Truly a tragedy has befallen us all.

Aushwitz - A Doctor's Eyewitness Account is not for the faint of heart. It is the memoirs of a doctor / prisoner of the infamous Nazi 'Death Camp'. I have personally read (at the time I write this) about a dozen memoirs on the Holocaust. Dr. Nyiszli's experiences cannot even be imagined. I am truly at a loss for words to articulate the feeling in my heart left by this accounting of evil. Under the direct supervision of the infamous 'Doctor' Mengele, Nyiszli performs, without question, some of the most horrific and scientifically useless 'experiments' on human beings. Truly, who among us could ever imagine trying to survive in a Death Camp such as Aushwitz? And yet the disturbing point over all in Nyiszli's book, is the fact that he VOLUNTEERED his services ! I will not judge anyone personally, however, was this author truly a victim or a conspirator with a 'better them than me' attitude? If you have the intellect and stomach for descriptions of horror, then I do acknowledge the importance of this 'Self-Damming' memoir, since it does offer a rare glimpse into the levels of mindset that was the sinister and the sadistic butchers that were the Nazi's...and their conspirators. Perhaps it is a confession of a repentant mind tortured with his actions of the past.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A horrifying and fascinating account. 30. Juli 1998
Von Ein Kunde
This was an early work on the life of an Auschwitz prisoner working as a forensic physician attached to a crematorium. The book is not, as some have suggested, simply another retelling of death camp terrors. It is also the fascinating story of Miklos Nyiszli, a professional scientist who is very proud of his skills. Forced to apply them under the most unspeakable conditions, he carries on - pleased with his new laboratory, his relationship with respected German institutes of race theory and eugenics (as a supplier of gruesome specimens), and eager not just to survive, but to be recognized for his talents by Mengele who was the Camp's chief scientific officer. He recognizes the horror of his position and the tenuous nature of his very existence. He loathes the gas and is in no way a collaborator - yet he takes pride in his technical accomplishments. As a fellow scientist, I am repelled, I am horrified, and I understand

5.0 von 5 Sternen A book that tells me we had better open our eyes. 3. Februar 1999
I read Auschwitz by Dr. Nyiszli atleast 5 years ago and never forgot it. The thing that sticks in my mind is "buisness as usual", he answers the question I have often asked, "Why doesn't someone do something?" When I look around today, I say why isn't somebody doing something to change the social behavior of kids and "buisness as usual" clicks into my head. We have kids shooting kids on their school grounds and no one does a thing. We as parents have allowed a system to take over just like in Nazis Germany. Children in america threaten to report their parents to socail services if the parent is trying to correct them. What is the difference, isn't that how it strarted in Germany? I think Dr. Nyisali does an excelent job studying and analysing the Nazis, the Jews and himself. It is so worth reading that I am try to get a copy of it again.

I have read this book at least a dozen times. The story it tells is unimaginable in this day and age but you must understand that this REALLY did occur. I have read many stories on life in Auschwitz and this one is by far and away the best. It pulls the reader in and it keeps you fascinated as you learn what this man went through. I was also fortunate enough to visit Auschwitz in 1992 and I read the book before going. I made notes of locations I wanted to see and wondered what they would actually look like. I came back from my trip with a new sense of what the book describes. I re-read the book after my return and could only think "how on Earth could anyone survive this inferno?" This book is gripping and I wholeheartedly recommend it. This is not just a is History!

This Author since he could survive although he was in theSonderkommando (even SS assigned to kilns were killed) is the MOSTIMPORTANT witness of the very particularity of Nazis' Holocaust: their INDUSTRIAL , perfectly organized way to annihilate millions of human beings, their SCIENTIFICLY codified and coordinated organisation for "clean" and total killing. This Author and his books and his witnessing in Nurmberg gives the best explanations how the Nazis' Holocaust is QUITE DIFFERENT, UTTERLY DIFFERENT from all other great slaughters.
