"What a book! Yet it's so simple that you learn without feeling it happen. Thank you, Michael; we needed it."—Joshua Logan

The casting director for Chicago, Pippin, Becket, Gypsy, The Graduate, the Sound of Music and Jesus Christ Superstar tells you how you can find your dream! Absolutely everything an actor needs to know to get the part is here: What to do that moment before, how to use humour; create mystery; how to develop a distinct style; and how to evaluate the place, the relationships and the competition. In fact, Audition is a necessary guide to dealing with all the "auditions" we face in life. This is the bible on the subject.

5.0 von 5 Sternen I've nearly worn my copy out with use! 10. Mai 2000
Von Ein Kunde
This book is an INVALUABLE resource. And I'm not a traditional actor, I'm an opera singer. I had to read this for a class on (what else?) auditioning, and loved it so much that I finished it the first day of class. Shurtleff's 12 Guideposts, carefully applied to just about any performance (I use them for arias, art songs, etc), can help create something nuanced and fascinating. As if the guideposts weren't enough, Shurtleff gives wonderful ideas on the nitty-gritty of auditions (how to present your past experience, what to wear, etc). I just can't say enough good about this book. When I perform an operatic scene that I've run through the 12 guideposts, I get comments like, "You're a great actress! You really have a theatrical flair!" Boy, does that feel good. I'd give this thing six stars if I could. I hate to even tell other people about this book, because then everyone can gain my edge.

This book is a wonderful slant on the creative process - I used it to teach my private voice students how to interpret songs for performance. It was recommended to me by one of my directors who is also a screenwriter. His words: "It's not just for actors, it's for directors, writers.... oh I think everyone should read it!" Having logged 25+ years in stage production I would agree: It's a shot of reality I could have used when I was just a snot-nosed kid starting out in the business (although I probably would have chafed at it at the time). I'll be passing on to my (successful) screenwriter friends - it's a wonderful tool for building characters both on the page and on the stage.

5.0 von 5 Sternen EXTREMELY PRACTICAL AND HELPFUL 28. Januar 2002
I am a theatre director and author (also occasional actor) living and working in Austria. An actress friend gave me "Audition" as a first night gift. I devoured the 12 Guideposts --- extremely helpful and practical. I must add that I read "Audition" primarily as a book on acting - which is mysticised far too much. I only wish there were more books of this calibre so chockful of helpful advice.
Shame that Shurtleff concentrates so much on contemporary and 20th century American drama - I would have been greatly interested in his comments on Shakespeare, Brecht, Stoppard ... Aristophanes ... Well, you can't have everything. The principles are the same.
Read it. Shurtleff is particularly good on how hard actors attempt to avoid being positive and interesting. Invaluable practical advice, less so for total beginners, perhaps, than for theatre-makers with some experience of theatre practice.

An eye-opening resource for actors. Auditioning requires a distinct set of skills and Shurtleff lays them out in bold print. His "12 Guideposts" provide a frame on which to build an effective and successful audition. Written by a life-long theatre professional, this no-nonsense how-to book, gives solid advice to every actor - no matter how experienced. Each chapter is filled with lessons taken from workshops, auditions, and life. My personal favorite was, "Observations from a Life in the Theatre". An absolute must have!

5.0 von 5 Sternen If you're into acting, you must own this book!!! 1. Oktober 1997

"Audition" is by far the best organized, and understandable acting book I've ever read. Not only can Mr. Shurtleff's guidelines be applied to auditioning, they are the fundamental building blocks for ALL character development. Mr. Shurtleff breaks auditioning down into 12 realistic, easy to achieve "guideposts". If you are a seasoned performer, or even mildly considering community theatre- Read "Audition"! They say 99% of professional acting careers is rejection- why not learn how to give your audition 110%?

5.0 von 5 Sternen right on the money!!!! 27. September 1998

This book will not only give you the insight and the know-how on how to get it together, but it's chock full of humorous anecdotes and phrases. The great thing is that not only can you use these techiniques towards acting, but they also work EXTREMELY well for job interviews and life as a general rule. It is more of a Real Life 101 and how to deal with directors (i.e bosses, teachers) It serves a multi-faceted purpose. Every actor/actress should own two copies (in case somebody steals one).

I got this book on a loan from my voice instructor when I went out for an audition of Tartuffe. I didn't make it, but I started reading the book, and it has helped me a lot! I got my next audition thanks to the tips, and guideposts. And even though I've read it completely through, I keep reading it over and over again. It has become my theater bible. I suggest anyone who has any desire to act read it. Even if you have no trouble with auditions, because it'll only help you improve.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This is a wonderful tool for EVERY actor! 27. Juni 1998

I am a tech but due to class requirements, I have to act as well. I read it when I first got it (several years ago) and I'm reading it again and discovering things I had missed before. Even if you are not becoming an actor or really studying acting, it gives perspective on not only acting but human behavior as well. It's wonderful reading no matter how many times you read it!
