4.0 von 5 Sternen Good Story had me engaged right to the end 26. April 2013

I picked this up because I was interested in the history side of the book. I was quickly surprised by the story arc after a few pages. The story is written in first person narrative which really adds to the book. It would have seemed lacking if it had been written in third person. It reads easy and despite that it is a historical fiction it is really a love story. The characters are believable and engaging. Personally I would have liked to get more background on the major characters but it may have hurt the story arc. RC is a hard luck kid who for what ever reason finds himself landing in a situation that is out of his control. Like most kids placed in that situation he just rolls with the punches and does what he has to just to get by. As the story progresses he falls in love with a woman and his love for her causes him to continue in his course. While at times the events seem unbelievable everything is plausible. As a WW II history buff I know that a lot of the things that happen in the story happened in real life. I was quickly asking myself if this was truly fiction or based on actual events.

If there was one thing about this book that I didn't like it had to be how the story ended. It is not that I didn't like the ending, It was that I wanted it to end differently. All in all I really enjoyed this book. It was an enjoyable story of love and compromise that kept me turning pages.

This is a fun book to read but, the Nazi tie in is weak. It is more a tale of petty crime than a WWII thriller. Yes there are a few spy's and a couple deliveries to Uboats off US shores but the majority of the book is a story about a youngster growing up on the road with a second rate band and learning to commit petty crimes for excitement

An interesting, if improbable premise. After an interesting beginning the story seemed to lose its way. After meandering through a number of irrelevant side stories it ties everything up with an unlikely finale. If you are looking for a light read and don't mind suspending credibility this book is okay.

Atlantic City Nazi

By

Charles Frankhauser

The story opens in Atlantic City in the 1930s as German U-boats patrol the American coastline. Ruby was raised in a German youth camp. Her name fits her as she is lovely, but also as hard as the gem she's named after. RC is a young adult who follows his parents as they travel with their ragtag band; sleeping in filthy cheap hotels; searching for their moment in the sun. His gorgeous mom is the come-on singer for the band despite her less than mediocre voice. And his daddy likes alcohol way too much.

RC and Ruby meet in Atlantic City where she spends summers doing a donkey diving act into a large vat of water off the pier of the famous boardwalk. And that's when RC's life changes. RC's innocence quickly fades, and Ruby's stealth crimes and tricks make this story enjoyable with humor and sweetness to it. RC is not a quick learner but Ruby teaches him card tricks landing him in a local bar cheating at blackjack. Mr. Brad, presumed to be mafia, carries a gun like all the rest of his kind and when RC asks why it's so short, he gives one of the funniest lines in this book as an answer. He allows RC to work there, sharing the profits with the gangster.

The excitement grows as Ruby explains that America might get into the war in Germany -- and she runs a booze delivery, shore to sea service to the enemy. Sweet tough Ruby is a German spy and RC is in way over his head. Author Charles Frankhauser writes his story in a tongue in cheek fashion accentuating the naivety of RC. The ramifications of their deeds do not dawn upon him but they will -- and it might be too late. The deeper he gets into Ruby's machinations the more he realizes what he's done. RC subtly begins a counterspy effort to correct his actions. Is he smart enough to go up against trained Nazi spies? The author keeps readers on the edge of their seats as the plot takes a different direction. There is intrigue around every corner. Is RC capable of fixing an innocent but treasonous attack against his own country? This is one of the most entertaining, funny, satirical books I've ever read. The cleverly written story will hold the reader's attention right to with superb ending - worthy of a five-star review.

Just could not get into the story. I love historical novels and read a lot in the WWII era but this one was not for me.
