Do you think, philosophical books are dry?- Read this!, 29. August 2000

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Astonishing the Gods (Taschenbuch)
Ben Okri's novel "Astonishing the Gods" keeps the promise its title makes. It is the proof, that philosophical novels need neither be dry nor dogmatic. It tells us about creativity, greatness, beauty and life in general without ever becoming trivial. A man whose name is never mentioned, has found out when he was at school, that he is invisible. Searching for the secret of his invisibility he gets to an island of bewildering beauty, where he discovers not only the secret he went to discover but also the secret of creativity.
It is hard to describe the book, as its beauty is in the sum of its metaphors, images, its language and style - and of course in the beauty of its topic: creation. My recommendation: Find yourself a comfortable corner where nobody disturbs you and read it: It is living proof, that philosophical novels - if they are as good as this one - can be like a drug without the dangerous or otherwise negative side effects. But face it: you might well become addicted to Okri's poetry in prose and want to know all his books.
I am fully convinced that Okri will become a classic in world literature, but I am equally convinced, that this book will even put a spell on those readers who usually find classics dry and boring. Let this book seduce you.
