This author is a very good writer and technical expositor. I find him easy to read and the book hard to put down, which is not something one can say about every technical text. I particularly liked the author's frequent lists of pros and cons. He is well aware that every design process is a series of tradeoffs. Knowing what they are is a big help. This book is the culmination of a technology development scenario. It mentions competitive and ancillary software metric methodologies and closes each chapter with an extensive bibliography. The best previous books on this subject were written by this author. This book is the 1999/2000 upgrade.

I am very happy to have read this book. It contains information that needs to be understood by all effected. No longer does any organization have the excuse of confusion regarding the state of the software development practice. Students should have these basic concepts covered during their mandatory and initial computer courses. Software practitioners can now access specific data regarding the use of specific tools and techniques in their respective industry. Managers can now invest their development efforts in what has worked elsewhere in their industry. Users and others investing in development processes can down negotiate with implementers for the inclusion and exclusion of specific practices. This is the focus of Software Assessments, Benchmarks and Best Practices.

This book is original and constructive in dealing with benchmarks,baselines,and best practices together. This is a genuinely illuminating and creative idea, and one which the author carries through effectively. He makes clear how these analyses work together to build an analysis of strength in building software, and recommendations for improvement. The author has a strong professional basis for this endeavor, and uses it well.
