“It's a testament to the authors' skill and wide experience that the pages seem to turn themselves.” —Publishers Weekly

    Praise for TOP SECRET
“A thrilling new series entitled Clandestine Operations has begun, opening doors into special ops, investigating the path to the Cold War, and unveiling clandestine connections between Argentina and Germany during WWII. . . . This incredible mix of intrigue, diplomacy and, of course, a bit of romance, is fantastic. The reader will note the horror of the war, along with the massive role intelligence agents played in the eventual victory.  In other words, when this story from a literary team that ignites suspense lovers everywhere comes to a close, readers will be panting for the next novel.”—Suspense Magazine

“Lots of interesting period history, dry humor, and clever scheming.”—Publishers Weekly

From the #1 New York Times– and Wall Street Journal–bestselling author comes the dramatic second adventure in the brand-new Clandestine Operations series about the Cold War, the fledgling Central Intelligence Agency—and a new breed of warrior.

In Top Secret, W.E.B. Griffin introduced a remarkable new cast of heroes as they found themselves on the front lines of an entirely different kind of war. Now, these men and women are going to find out what they’ve really gotten themselves into.

James Cronley thought he had done well—he didn’t know he’d done this well.

His first successful mission for the about-to-be-official new Central Intelligence Directorate has drawn all kinds of attention, some welcome, some not. On the plus side, he’s now a captain; promoted to Chief, DCI, Europe; and in charge of a top secret spy operation. On the minus side, a lot of people would like to know about that operation, including not only the Soviets, but his own Pentagon, as well as a seething J. Edgar Hoover.

Cronley knows that if just one thing goes wrong, he’s likely to get thrown to the wolves. As if that weren’t enough pressure, complications are springing up on all sides. He’s discovered a surprising alliance between the former German intelligence chief and, of all things, the Mossad. A German family that Cronley never knew he had has suddenly, and suspiciously, emerged. And he’s due for a rendezvous with an undercover agent against the Soviets known only as Seven K.

It’s when he meets Seven K that he gets the real surprise.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Nicht wirklich empfehlenswert! 29. Januar 2015
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf

    3.0 von 5 Sternen The thrill is gone .... 1. Januar 2015
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I have to admit that this offering is a cut above the last offering the Griffin franchise produced. But, reluctantly, I have to say the thrill is gone. The books all have a formula now. The hero gets promoted over his head but winds up performing brilliantly. He has a dangerous affair with a beautiful woman. Last time in this series it was KGB spy. This time it is a beautiful WAC who may be working for a maybe competitive agency. Who knows. There is a lot of internecine inter-agency conflict punctuated by huffing, puffing, posturing and dressing each other down leading up to an anticlimactic mission whose successful completion ends the book.

The Griffin franchise was on solid ground opening up fresh plot lines and characters in the Presidential Agent Series until someone decided to destroy that highly likeable product line by releasing the most disappointing book I have ever read, the ill begotten Janet Evanovich clone, Hazardous Duty. Did somebody at Penguin really think they could sell Evanovich style, cute little screw-up story lines to readers who regard Griffin as the poet laureate of the American warrior class?

The current book, while readable, still lacks the punch of former offerings. I gave it three stars because it was more or less solidly crafted unlike some previous offerings. But, when I finished it, my overall impression was "been there, done that, why take me through it again?"

I have some words of advice for Griffin Jr. If you are going to try to fill Senior's shoes then learn your craft and learn the culture. Read every line written by Col. Leonard B. Scott over and over until you understand not just the plots but the warrior culture. Then read every line ever written by Capt. James H. Webb, Jr. and do the same. You're too old to join the military so find a VFW that will let you hang out and be the humblest guy there. Buy drinks, listen and learn. If you are lucky, some of them will eventually open up to you and help you absorb the culture.

3.0 von 5 Sternen A better effort but still not exactly great 31. Dezember 2014
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf

So it's been several years since Mr. Griffin released a decent novel, especially since he began writing with his son. I tend to suspect the son does all the writing these days and it's infortunately showed. This was a better book than most of the recent ones, but still not worthy of more than 3 stars. There are several problems that seem to be common themes lately.

    1) Way too much time is spent reviewing information from the last book in the series. Lots and lots of wasted pages.
    2) There are continuity errors between the books that often are thinly papered over with very implausible scenarios.
    3) Practically every woman in the books is someone's wife, mother, or a slut. And sometimes all three of those at once.

I actually enjoy some of the quasi-historical look at post war Germany but they just keep tossing one crazy log on the fire after the next. Let the story stand for itself, stop with all the crazy tangents.

1.0 von 5 Sternen The Cover Art is the best thing about this book. 27. Januar 2015
Von J. Biallas - Veröffentlicht auf
    Format:Kindle Edition
First, I must say that I really regret writing this review. W.E.B. Griffin has been a favorite author of mine for decades. I have spent many hours reading the various books he has published under this name and all of his other pen names.
This book is the latest example of a formula that Griffin has used again and again and yet again.
The main character is another very slight variant of all of Griffin's quasi-aristocratic main characters: Lowell, Pickering, Payne, Frade, Castillo etc. etc. etc. All very rich, smart, brave, lucky chick magnets. All do their work with the blessing of a supreme being or by direction of the President, the Secretary of the Navy, the Mayor of Philadelphia, or some such. Only the names have been changed to protect the author's pocketbook. However, all of those other books at least had the semblance of a plot to catch the attention of the reader. This book, and this series as a whole, get an F in this regard. It takes a whole book to tell the story of ... well... frankly, not very much at all. However, we are "treated" to pages and pages and pages of dialogue where the characters talk about themselves, who somebody's Godfather is, or who's on first in Post War Germany, endlessly, but where no character DOES anything much. There is, of course, the required stupidly officious, single minded, cowardly and incompetent officer character who tries to inflict his bureaucratic self-righteousness on the Hero...who gets his, apparently just, desserts at the end.
I confess to having read every word of this pointless blather, hoping against hope for some real plot development of a story that I could care about. I regret to say that never occurred. If you really want to read this, get it from the library.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Just going through the motions. 30. Dezember 2014
Von Wells Bengston - Veröffentlicht auf
    Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This review is of the Audible version of this book. It continues in the same style of the previous two Clandestine Operations novels. It introduces new characters and develops previously existing characters more, providing continuation of the story.

I like the concept and the basic story, but I don't like the style. The style is obviously meant to continue W.E.B. Griffin's earlier works, with lots of details and "insider" stories and point of view, but it is missing that authenticity that grabbed me so many years ago, when I started reading the Brotherhood of War books.

A character who has just been offered a job says, "I want to bring 3 of my girls with me." and another character assumes she is a lesbian because of that statement. Really? This novel is filled with situations that strain belief.

The narrator is particularly annoying for me. It sounds like he is trying to inject drama into every moment of the tale, no matter how un-dramatic some parts of the tale are.

With this novel, I find myself wanting to know what is going to happen, but the way the story is told gets in the way too often.

I've read every W.E.B Griffin book except for the police related ones. At this point, it feels like I'm part of a couple just going through the motions. I keep getting the books, but the thrill is long-gone.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Don't waste your money or your time on this drivel 27. Januar 2015
    Von quidproquo - Veröffentlicht auf
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Another disappointing effort by an author/franchise that has lost his/its ability to sustain reader interest. This yarn (yawn) is lacking action and too full of chin music among characters who just are not worthy of my attention or support. I keep hoping that the Russians will assassinate Captain Cornley (sp?), or that he talks himself to death. No such luck. Don't waste your money or your time on this drivel.
