Vlll PREFACE tain the somewhat colloquial tone due in the first instance to delivery before an intimate audience and in a small room. If any stray student of Romance runs through these pages and comes across my reference to the author of A ucassin et Nicolete in the eighth lec ture, I trust that he will not think that I have too lightly essayed to settle a serious problem in a field not my own. The fact is that there is a class of popular A rabic romances which exhibit exactly the movement of the cante-fable, the story being told in alternate sections of prose and verse and in such a way that these, to a consider able extent, cover the same matter. Of this the Romance of Bibars, lately printed in full at Cairo, is a good example. I hope to deal with this subject at greater length elsewhere. A gain it is a pleasant duty to thank my col league Professor Gillett for much generous assistance both in talking over points in meta physics and in reading the whole book in MS. In my wifes debt I am more deeply than ever before for, in truth, her assistance in this book has fallen little short of formal collaboration.
