I bought this book (among others) seeking inspiration to start being creative again. And yes, this book offers lots of it. Very very beautifully designed pages with lots of tipps - ranging from introducing different types of sketchbooks, what to do with "mistakes" (unsatisfactory or botched drawings) to choosing topics such as integrating your shopping list or whatever.
The book is illustrated with journal pages from various artists... and there comes the big BUT: with a very few exceptions, these artists are very similar in style, sketches looking quite alike. (For this I detract one star. I'd have liked a bit more variation, some more abstract examples, maybe a bit more collage, etc.) Most often done in ink and watercolour, the sketches look more like proper drawings than like journal-type scratchings, very professionally done, and for someone like me, who just wants to start dabbling again, this can be very daunting and demoralizing, because they just aren't reproducable (for me).
In my mind, this book is very inspiring and beautiful; artists who want to literally step outside (...their studios) get lots of help on how to start of keep their art journal. For beginners, though, or people who haven't yet found their style and/or honed their abilities this book may be a bit too much, and also, there are no step-by-step examples or how-to exercises. On the other hand, exactly these how-to, paint-by-number things can be very frustrating to "real artists", who don't WANT to reproduce the style or a picture of someone else. So consider what you want to get out of a book like this: inspiration and tipps, or detailed help recreating and image! If it's the latter, maybe better choose another book!
