Classic of Military History,

Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Art of War (Taschenbuch)
"The Art of War" by Baron de Jomini is one of the two great classic works on strategy (i.e. mainly of land-warfare; if naval strategy is included, a third book, the work of A.T.Mahan should be added) of the 19th century, second only to "On War" by Carl von Clausewitz. Jomini, founder of the St. Petersburg military academy, had been considered the leading theorist on strategy of the century, until Helmuth von Moltke, chief of the Prussian General Staff and in charge of the most successful Prussian operations in the wars against Austria (1866) and France (1870/71), admitted, that (besides the Bible and Homer) Clausewitz had been his inspiration. After that, Jomini's work never reached its former importance again, though it remains one of the classics of strategy and of military history. -Although some of Jomini's lessons are still relevant today, the book should mainly be seen as a most important document on military thinking in the 19th century (which the book helped to form to a great extend), as well as a book on military history, as Jomini, being an eye-witness, relates many episodes and campaigns of the Napoleonic wars. Jomini himself served in Napoleon's army, first as a batallion commander, later as colonel in Ney's staff, being present at several major battles. In 1814 Jomini changed sides and remained in the Russian service. - Conclusion: A book essential to anybody studying military history and strategy, a classic. The present edition (paperback) is well edited, merely the rather "antique" typeface is a little bit annoying to the modern reader. Still I can strongly recommend the purchase of the book. Baron Antoine Henry de jomini, who served in both the French and later on the Allied side as an aide-de-camp to the Czar during the Napoleonic Wars, has remained one of the fundamental sources of military thinking right up to modern times. Jomini divided the art of war into five branches, strategy, grand tactics, logistics, engineering and tactics. He was also the first to recognise the sixth, diplomacy. Jomini's masterpiece still has lessons for the military planner today.
