Amazon.co.uk

Jeanette Winterson's novel Arts & Lies begins with three people seated opposite each other on a train as it winds out of a city, making its way past cemeteries and houses towards the sea. Handel, a Catholic doctor, clutches a book, worrying at the edges of his medical mistakes. Picasso, a young woman with a consuming desire to paint, runs from abuse by her brother, with his "bull's balls and Lucifer rod". Sappho, seducer of women, carries her whirling words of poetry quietly at her side. Art & Lies intimately unravels the stories of these three. Although strangers, their memories touch and dance, circling a handful of events in which they have met (unbeknown to them) as the carriages of the train flit in and out of the sunlight.

At times the writing is impenetrable--there are paragraphs of French, Latin and German, a section of a Strauss opera and an impossibly demanding twist on language that feels mannered and fragmented. Often though, there is a lyrical intensity, a poetic eroticism to reward the struggle. There is also a light-heartedness; Winterson's particular, peculiar sense of fun, seen at its best in Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit and Sexing the Cherry asserts itself here in the raunchy narrative of Isaac Newton's prostitute that leaps up from the pages of Handel's book. Art & Lies is one of Winterson's most ruthless experimentations with literary form that shows her at her exuberant best and worst. --Jane Honey

From Booklist

Each of Winterson's poetic, philosophical, and witty novels, from Sexing the Cherry (1990) to Written on the Body (1993), takes us by surprise, and her newest work is no exception. For instance, the characters in this metaphoric, historical, sensual, and often wrenching tale are named Handel, Picasso, and Sappho, but Handel is a doctor and Picasso a woman. Sappho is the much lauded yet vilified lyric poet of antiquity, but she also walks the streets of London at the bitter end of the twentieth century, and all three characters cross paths at odd or pivotal moments. The fourth character, the bawd alluded to in the title, is Doll Sneerpiece, the heroine of an old book Handel is reading on a train. This train, spanning the distance from the city to the sea, symbolizes time, just as a house is a metaphor for memory. As Winterson spins the intriguing, dramatic, and significant tales of each of her characters, she satisfies our craving for story but accomplishes so much more, articulating the meaning of time, art, passion, and hypocrisy in prose charged with the pulse and imagery of poetry. As the subtitle suggests, this novel hinges on a metaphor of four-part musical harmony. Like music, it does not need to be "about" anything. (If you need a complex and sophisticated plot to hold your interest, this book is not for you.) Each character has a story, no doubt, but what matters is what emotions their lives evoke. Winterson uses her considerable command of metaphor, history, symbolism, and all things bizarre to portray the emotional lives of three very different characters. This is as it should be, for detailed accounts of their lives would ruin the book. It would instead be just the sad and rather ordinary story of a madwoman, a lonely old doctor, and a sleepless poet. Instead, Winterson has used key events of her characters' lives as a framework on which to craft something rich and strange.

"There's no such thing as autobiography, there's only art and lies." -Jeanette Winterson

A train goes careening down the tracks, carrying several passengers with catchy names: Handel, Picasso, and Sapho. Another surfaces, Ms. Doll Snodpiece, who also has a train connection to these three. These characters' lives all intersect as the story wends it way along to its smashing conclusion. This author is extremely talented, and has characteristically set the work in a fresh new way. It contains some mesmerizingly beautiful prose, which is also characteristic of this author. Also typical is the strong character development, and the bits of philosophy and wisdom inherent in the story.

It is difficult to admit, because this wonderful author and her books have dazzled me in the past, but this work lost its momentum about halfway through. It took a long time to find the wherewithal to finish this book but, to quote my friend Angie: "it redeemed itself in the end." Other books she has written have dazzled me much more, however. Recommended -- but please consider: Written on the Body, The Passion, and Sexing the Cherry by the same author, which are all MUCH better books.

Two of Jeannette Winterson's books have changed my life. I am absolutely moved to tears when I read "The Passion" or "Written on the Body". While "Art and Lies" (great title) isn't a horror, I didn't really like it. It was a highly clever, very cerebral book, but if felt cold and iconoclastic to me. It had some very good musings though, and she is such a skillful writer that I'll try and read this book again (not any time soon though) and see if I just didn't "get it".
