I was a bit tired and unable to concentrate well when I noticed "The Art of Concentration" lying in the airport. Ah, I thought, just what I need... but I was wrong. I found the book fairly dull and it took me a lot of self-motivation to even finish it. In that sense, I could apply the ideas in the book directly to the book itself :)
The book isn't very thick, about 230 pages. In contains 10 chapters and an introduction chapter. Most of the book has a lot of references to popular science, yet I found the reference shallow. Also, probably one of the things that made the book dull, there didn't seem to be much stories told at all. It is a quick summary of a bunch of popular research, a quick conclusion, and a few tips on what you could do. Next to that, a lot of the tips didn't really seem to relate directly to concentration but purely relate to "How to be healthy". In the end, the author makes concentration and improving memory equal which felt really awkward to me. Anyways, what is covered?
The introduction chapter is a quick introduction on why concentration matters. It also is the start of the authors rant against modern technology and interruptions. Chapter 1 and chapter 2 is a summary on how our brain works, or a popular summary of the latest brain research (similar as you find it books like Emotional IQ). Chapter three covers other than the-previous-chapter-brain-related-things that prevent you to concentrate such as procrastination. Chapter four also includes the MBTI personality types and show how they relate to concentration. Chapter 5 and 6 introduce quick tips that might help you improve your concentration and chapter 7 discusses children development and how to improve their concentration. The last chapter are just random collections of more tips and exercises.
I was looking for a good book on concentration with insights on what it is, what philosophies exist around it and how to improve it. This was not such a book. Instead I got a quick summary of loads of other books about how to be a better and more healthy person. Next to that, the book was not written in an exciting way and required a lot of concentration to simply get through it. For that reason, I do not recommend this book. I didn't want to give it 1 start because it isn't completely useless or wrong either, it is just dull and not particularly interesting. Skip.
