Kurzbeschreibung

Two main styles of architecture in Armenia and in Iran are intriguing. While a stone architecture is very common in Armenia, a clay architecture is commonly used in Iran. The present work, therefore, is a comparative, pictorial presentation of architectural features in two countries of Armenia and Iran. From this point of view, furthermore, the present work may be regarded as the first, original book. To be more specific, there are many books about art and architecture in Armenia or in Iran. Such works are introducing or analyzing the main architectural features in either of the two countries. But none brings the two styles together side by side. On the other hand, the present work seeks to put two similar architectural features from Armenia and from Iran in front of each other: one a stone or a modern architectural feature from Armenia and the other a similar to it a simple or a clay architectural feature from Iran. To this objective, the illustrations are grouped into five categories. Group 1: Public ( general) Buildings in Armenia and in Iran; Group 2: Restored or renovated Heritage Buildings in Armenia and in Iran; Group 3: Stone columns in Armenia vs Brick Columns in Iran; Group 4: Decorative Designs (Art): Stone engravings in Armenia (khachkars) vs. Traditional Tile-works ( by enameled, baked clay) in Iran; Group 5: Religious Building in Armenia vs. Jam'a Mosques in Iran.

It should be one star, I added the second for the pictures, which are nice. By the way, to help those who may not know, each picture can be double tapped, (two quick taps), to activate the picture that can be pinched, stretched and manipulated to see the details up close.
Now why abomination?
The author compared apples and oranges. It was supposed to be comparison of architecture in two countries. Armenia with its history could indeed be chosen to compare with Iran, however Dr. Hussein Manoochehri (Ph.D) compared old, historical buildings of Iran (giving their names and times of construction) with Soviet soc-realism buildings of early twentieth century. If you get the book for free or are curious enough to pay, check locations 13, 16 and 17. You will see the characteristic huge sculptures known all over Soviet places. You will find them in Moscow metro. What THAT has to do with Yerevan, I have no idea. The church compared with Iranian magnificent buildings is contemporary. There is one church in Yerevan, that survived earthquakes and purgings. It is Katoghike Tsiranovor Church of Avan, constructed in seventh century, but good doctor didn't deem it worthy of a picture. He photographed however the opera house, built in 1933 by communists and super contemporary sculpture od cow made of scrap metal. Super cool, but that's an example of contemporary art and nothing more. Couldn't be compared even with Louvre's Rodin or other famous sculpture. There are two photographs of Iranian pre-Islamic stones (loc. 29 and 29), but there is not a single picture of same quality and super compatible cuneiform-ic "birth certificate" of Yerevan, an inscription left on basalt stone in 782BC. about foundation of the city. The most fun I had with location 37. It is described as "hand made engravings on samaavarl (Iranian handicraft) in the baazaar of Isfahaan, Iran 2004".
Why? Because although there were findings in Azerbaijan, near Dashusl village that proved that similar devices were used as far back as 3600 years ago, with similar findings in China, contemporary samovars were constructed in Russia. They traveled to Iran, where craftsmen chose to adapt them and expatriate around the world, usually made with German silver. To photograph them as something comparable was rather silly. I think Armenians used real McCoy. Google samovars, you will see.
To sum it up, if I could see this book as two different books, one about Iran, other about Yerevan, I would give them 3.5 and 2.5 stars respectively. As it is this comparison of two incomparable topics is just crazy. Especially when a huge preference for the winner is so clear. Don't bother, Google is better, although it will take longer and you won't be able to study details of the pictures.
