2.0 von 5 Sternen Great original, but this edition is very poor 14. Juni 2013

This has been a favorite story of mine since childhood. In addition to liking the book, I'm also a fan of both the David Niven movie and the Piers Brosnan mini-series. This story is great stuff.

However, this translation is dry as dust. The edition I read decades ago was interesting and lively. This translation is devoid of excitement, and there is very little dialogue. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is also abridged, which would make sense for a cheap version of a printed book, but makes no sense at all in an ebook.

I cannot recommend this edition of this book whatsoever. I consider it to have been a waste of time. I may do some research on various translations and see if I can find a better one. If Verne's original writing had been as bad as this translation, we'd never know his name. LOL

My twelve year old son and I read this book concurrently, and we both enjoyed it very much. Fogg's travels provide a wonderful world geography lesson, especially if locations of his travels are mapped during the reading. Not only did we learn about geography, Fogg models a superb example of many virtuous characteristics not found in any form of media today. He exhibits self-control, patience, love and self-sacrifice, generosity, gentleness, determination, and even grit! I wish there were authors around today such as Jules Verne. Although this book was read primarily for academic reasons, we gained so much more from it than expected!

5.0 von 5 Sternen An entrancing and adventure filled book 26. Juli 2014

I read Around the World in 80 Days in 2 days and could not stop reading for hours on end. The story kept me exulted the whole time and I liked the way it went into the very different personalities of Passepartout, Mr. Fogg and Fix. The book had an excellent plot with the most unexpected twists and the descriptions of the different cultures and other things of interest were great. I would highly recommend this book as well as 20,000 Leagues Leagues Under the Sea and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Phileas Fogg is a betting man and bets his cohorts at a local gentlemen's club that he can make it around the world in 80 days. They don't believe it can be done and they take his bet, 20,000 pounds. Fogg and his French servant, Passepartout, leave London immediately on their journey. Fogg has planned the trip meticulously, but any delay can cause huge problems with making a connection to another leg of the journey. They will travel through India, Hong Kong, across the ocean to San Francisco, to New York, and back across the pond to London. They'll travel by train, ship, and any other means necessary to win the wager.

This was a really fun book. I didn't expect to enjoy it nearly as much as I did. I assumed it would be a boring tale of a journey and feel really outdated. I was pleasantly surprised. I felt like I was learning a bit about world travel in days gone by and I really enjoyed the excursions and incidents Fogg and Passerpartout got into (and somehow out of). Passerpartuout was definitely the hero of the tale for me. He seemed to get the most out of the adventure and had the most interactions with local people in ensuring the journey was successful (outside of Fogg just paying money). They definitely had many adventures around the world. So glad I got to this one finally.

A richly entertaining and rewarding book. It is a pleasure to read it with one fun adventure after another. And it has little gems in it. Like when Phileas Fogg goes through the U.S. state of Utah, he sees the Great Salt Lake. And Jules Verne compares it to the Dead Sea in Israel. In fact, he says that it is often called the Dead Sea. And that an American equivalent of the Jordan River flows into it. I've never heard the two compared like that, but I always thought they were very similar.

Basically, Fogg makes a bet with a bunch of stuffy upper class Londoners that he can travel around the world in 80 days. This before airplanes were invented. So he has to take balloons and ships and trains. In every country he goes to, he has some very amusing adventures. All action packed. I think any tourist can relate to it.

The two main characters, the very proper Englishman Fogg and his French assistant, became to me very real, even though they are a little bit comical, and slightly stereotypical. But the writing is so clean and clever, that you embrace the characters entirely as real.

In spite of all the changes to the world, this book holds up very well. It is a fun and adventurous story that reads as well today as when it was written. And I am confident you will enjoy it.
