The Book is a jewel for reenactors and a must have.
It has hundreds of copy drawings of original pieces of arms and armour as well as of drawings taken from books or frescos or fragments of everyday life implements.
It would take immense time and money for an individual to visit all these museums to see the original pieces or to get all the books where the original drawings etc. are pictured.
As the information is not the main certain of this book as much as it is a catalouge for the interested individual, it is not recommending for those who are looking for a cyclopedia on weapons and armour.
As the book has two parts, one for the discription of the pieces (with a short information about the region of the foundings)and one where the illustrations are pictured, it is a bit annoying to keep flipping the pages specialy as the book is thick.
If you are looking for authentic pictorial sources for muslim (arab, turkish, persian etc) weapons or pieces from the russian principalities or from further east as far as india and china (the last two in much less number)for a high quality replica or copy of an original, this is your book.

Upon opening this book you find that it is not really a book but a giant catalog of drawings of archealogical pieces many of which have nothing to do with arms or armour. Each has a brief description and if you wish to see the line drawing of the item described you must continually flip to the back of the book. Besides these short descriptions, actual text amounts to probably only 15 pages throughout the book. Not very informative overall.

Monumental work, if you know the subject

David Nicolle tends to be biased towards the Mid-East (ie: all good things in the Middle Ages come from Asia), but he manages to mostly leave his biases out in this monumental work. If you are looking for a pretty picture book, or an introduction to the topic, like various Osprey books, this ain't it. What it is a look at surviving pieces, iconography, statuary, and literary referrances to present a comprehensive look at what arms and armour of the period are recorded. Definately more for the serious enthousiast than the casual reader.
