Worth a Read, 28. August 2005

Howard Sykes thought he was a normal boy and his family was a normal family with a fault or two, when suddenly the Goon, "a being who melts into the foreground and sticks there", appears in the kitchen and wants Archer's two thousands. It turns out that there are seven wizards running the town, all of whom want the two thousand, although they don't really know themselves what for. What follows is a strange tale of many surprises.
Surprises are what you will get mostly with this book. They start on page one with the Goon appearing and they won't stop until you've read the last page. Midway through the book I thought there couldn't be much more, but I was proven wrong. Diana Wynne Jones' creativity seems to be infinite. It's funny to see how one person can have so many crazy ideas and still make them look plausible.
In contrast to her Chrestomancy series I found this book easier to read. There were several passages when I had to laugh out loud. I only grant four stars to this book, though, because while it was interesting to read, the first two thirds didn't grip me the way a 5-star-book does. I could easily have laid it aside, but fortunately I didn't. The twists of the last third more than made up for this. Additionally, I was disappointed that the book doesn't say to which use the two thousand are put. Right from the beginning I had hoped for it, but there wasn't really a word on it. That's what I missed.
But I still do recommend this book to Wynne Jones fans, though it also is worth a read if you've never had one of her books in your hand.
