The Apple-Certified Way to Learn

This all-new guide presents a real-world workflow from raw media to finished project to demonstrate the features of Final Cut Pro X and the practical techniques you will use in editing projects. Using professionally acquired media, you’ll utilize the same tools and editing techniques used by editors worldwide in this revolutionary editing software. Renowned editor and master trainer Brendan Boykin starts with basic video editing techniques and takes you all the way through Final Cut Pro’s powerful features.
The lessons start as real world as it gets–with an empty timeline. After downloading the media files, you will be guided through creating a project from rough cut to final edit. The basic workflow and tools are covered in Lessons 1 through 4 where you will create a rough cut. The real-world workflow continues through the remaining lessons as you take the basic project and enhance it with a deeper dive into the more advanced Final Cut Pro X features including how to efficiently organize and share media with the new Libraries, enhanced audio tools, streamlined media management, retiming, and more.
•  Downloadable lesson media files to work sequentially through exercises for hours of hands-on training.
•  Focused lessons teach concepts and take students step by step through professional, real-world editing scenarios to create a final project.
•  Chapter review questions summarize what students learn to prepare them for the Apple certification exam.
The Apple Pro Training Series is both a self-paced learning tool and the official curriculum of the Apple Training and Certification program. Upon completing the course material in this guide, you can become Apple Certified by passing the certification exam at an Apple Authorized Training Center.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Best Book On Final Cut Pro X On The Market 5. März 2014
Von A. B. Balser - Veröffentlicht auf
I studied Educational Psychology in college, have been in media production my whole life, and I've been teaching Final Cut Pro professionally for a decade, and have over time memorized every version ever be published of these ATPS books for FCP.

This one is the BEST of the series to ever be published! By far! A refreshing new approach to teaching the industry's most cutting edge professional NLE: hands on, professional workflow, using a real world production, very clearly presented.

It starts with raw material, walks the student through importing, organizing, basic edits, refining edits, etc, to a finished product. Unlike previous versions which jumped around the workflow and jump around between different projects, this one uses the same project, in order of professional workflow, from start to finish.

I'm very impressed with the comprehensiveness of the subject matter covered, along with how easy the hands-on work is for the student. Mr. Boykin, Peachpit, and Apple really did an impressive job with this one. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn Final Cut Pro X, beginner or intermediate. I know some advanced users who would learn a thing or two from this book, also.

Hands-on, step by step, professional workflow from start to finish, with a real world video project reflecting the type of work 90% of the industry does, this is the single best training on the planet for Final Cut Pro X 10.1 and later.

2.0 von 5 Sternen NOT a comprehensive FCPX book and NOT a good book to teach from. 15. September 2014
Von Robert - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I, too have been teaching Final Cut Pro for over a decade and have been a certified trainer with Apple since version 3 of the program. On three separate occasions (2 three day classes and one 6 day class) I tried teaching from this book to different levels of students. One thing I can say for certain is that I am not a fan of teaching from this book!

The Good: I'll start off by saying that the material used for the book is both shot well and visually exciting. Boykin covers a great deal of information in this book and his writing is clear and easy to understand. Many of the tips presented during the data management phase are well thought out and would certainly help any editor manage a larger project.

The Bad:
Missing from the book are lesson time estimates, which were very helpful for planning how many lessons a teacher wants to try to accomplish in a class. This removal may have been due to the fact that lesson four would probably be rated at taking around four or five hours to complete. This information should have been spread out across the other lessons.

Missing from the first half of the book is the use of timecode in order to help you assemble the project the way the book asks you to. Timecode is the "language" of editing and without this "language" what students get are projects that don't look like the ones in the book.

Also missing from the book our catch-up projects. When books such as these are used in the classroom environment it is helpful to have mile marker projects that can be used to catch the student up and make their project look just like the one in the book. In this book, if you get halfway through and you have not managed to make your project look exactly like the one in the book, then your references are off for some of the future lessons. It is a bad design made worse by the lack of timecode to help you build the project "correctly" the first time.

There is no demonstration of the ability to preview individual channels in the channel configuration section in the inspector and no material to truly demonstrate this with. The book only tells you that you can turn certain channels off.

While the book mentions what loudness, background noise removal, and hum removal do, there are no examples and no material provided to demonstrate these effects.

Color correction instruction is fairly limited and applied to a single clip with only the slightest white balance issue. Once again my critique around this is that this book is supposed to replace both the basic and advanced level books. If this is the case, advanced level instruction should be supplied.

Crop and Ken Burns effects are mentioned but not demonstrated.

Audio is the only thing ever keyframed. There are no demonstrations or mentions of the ability to keyframe all the other parameters that allow for it! (this includes not demonstrating basic movement animations)

Other than the interview clips, no dialogue footage is provided. (Who is this book targeting? Just documentary editors? If you are trying to teach a wide variety of students, provide a wide variety of material.)

These single person shots (of the same person) are laughingly used to demonstrate Final Cut Pro's facial detection feature. The results are not very diverse, with only two smart collections being created (Medium Shot and One Person). This doesn’t effectively demonstrate both the benefits as well as the flaws of this feature.

Stabilization and rolling shutter are mentioned but not demonstrated (no footage is provided to demonstrate either of these)

The provided multicam footage is extremely boring and doesn't demonstrate the full potential of multicam, including mixing formats. (The footage provided is of 2 angles of a single interview, neither of which have compelling moments to cut back and forth between.)

Adding new angles to a previously created multicam clip is not demonstrated.

The Kindle version of this book has been laid out quite horribly. Images regularly overlap text.

Recording audio into projects for voice over is neither mentioned nor demonstrated.

The fact that audio effects exist is mentioned... however, audio effects are not demonstrated on any clips.

The precision editor is not once used throughout the entire book. It is shown in a screen grab, but only to show how handles are being used in a transition and never labeled by name.

Summary: so, what does all this mean… Well, it means that while this book could be sufficient for getting a first time Final Cut 10 user up on their feet, it is in no way a complete combination of an introductory and advanced text. If anything, through the absence of certain information, the book promotes the need for a teacher. So, while this book may drive more students my way, I will no longer be using this book to teach my classes at the various schools and companies I teach through.

I can only hope that future versions of this book will address these issues.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Complaints about the Kindle Version 17. April 2014
Von Grimod - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Some people below have complained that the layout of the Kindle version is sloppy and that there is no index.

The layout of the copy that I have is fine, and there is a full, hyperlinked index.

I have not used Final Cut before. Yesterday, I downloaded a trial copy of 10.1 and a copy of Mr. Boykin's book. Four chapters in, I think that the book is excellent. The tutorial, hands-on approach is extremely helpful. Worth every penny.

3.0 von 5 Sternen A decent book 17. März 2014

I haven't read through all of this publication yet, but so far it's pretty well written with some good information. I have the kindle version, and for whatever reason this doesn't have a table of contents, nor an index, making navigating the book a pain. Note to publisher, always include a table of contents and index, always. Based upon that, I would opt for the book, because you're going to want to reference prior chapters through out the learning process, and a book is much easier.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Graphics issue?? 16. Februar 2014
Von Gregory J McKay - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This is not a comment on the actual textual content of the Kindle eBook, but rather, the implementation of graphics and text on different devices.

I refer to the many, many embedded screen shot type of graphics. On my iPad, all works normally - that is to say, a line of text - usually some instruction, and immediately below, a screenshot of what that instruction should look like. All sounds normal - it's what I would expect to see in the printed book.

However, using Kindle on my iMac, the graphic is half a line higher - and overlaps the text above it - so I can only see the top half of the letters. I've tried resizing the Kindle page, shutting down, then restarting and all of the other usual "fixes" - all to no avail.

The Kindle version is essential useless on my iMac - and entirely normal on my iPad.

Obviously, the file is fine - as implemented by the publishers - because it works on my iPad. But the Kindle side of it seems flawed on the iMac - so I guess it's a Kindle fault?? Who knows. But, this review published so that others may be forewarned- there may be an issue.

As I said, I have no problem with the book itself - it's great - but so far, only if viewed on my iPad.
