Apollyon: The Destroyer Is Unleashed, by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins, is another suspenseful chronicle of those left behind after the rapture of the saved. As the book opens, Hattie Durham, the former airline attendant and mistress of the antichrist, Nicolae Carpathia, is wracked with confusion about what to do with her illegitimate child, whose birth date is coming due. Rayford Steele, the airline pilot who flies Carpathia's plane, is ambivalent about the mounting evidence that his late wife, Amanda, may have been a false believer. Buck, the ace newspaper reporter, and Chloe, his wife, are debating whether to have a child when the future of the world is so uncertain. And all of the world's thousands of believers are gathering in Jerusalem for a stadium rally, which will lead to a showdown with Nicolae Carpathia. Believers are increasingly relying on the Internet for underground communication, and most of them are becoming more and more tempted by violence as a way of battling the forces of evil overtaking the world. But demon locusts are shortly dispatched as a divine plague to attack those who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads; this buys the believers a little bit of time to solve their respective personal crises, all of which end in ways that will keep you riveted until the last page.

International fugitives Rayford Steele and Buck Williams travel to Jerusalem as the fourth judgment of the apocalypse begins.

I very much enjoyed this book, however, like many, Jenkins and LaHaye have managed to misinterpret much of Biblical Prophecy i.e. (without revealing any storyline) thinking that antichrist is an individual rather than a way of life and assuming the "Beast" will come bearing a false sense of peace signaling the beginning of a ficticious seven year period, commencing with a dreamed up covenant with Israel for seven years and in the middle of this period the Beast will break the covenant. No where in the Bible does it say anything like this although I will admit it is a common misinterpretation of Daniel 9:24-27. True scholars know these verses do not speak of events yet to come, but rather they refer to events that happened 2000 years ago and many of Jenkins and LaHaye's other "yet to come" ideas are also events that have already passed i.e. Babylon is already rebuilt (buy "Rise of Babylon" by C. H. Dyer from Amazon.com), Jews have already experienced the tribulation, and having done so and becoming a Nation State in 1967, which incidentally was exactly the year Daniel prophecied (Daniel 8:13-14, Luke 21:24). Furthermore, prior to and since the United Nations voted in 1947 (again, exactly the year prophecied) for the Independence of Israel (Daniel 12:11-12), God's chosen people have already begun to be "led" by God back to Israel, and "the Branch" or Messiah will be the next one to rebuild the temple, not the "Beast." On top of all this, anti-Christ forces already surround the city of Jerusalem (see CNN), the Lord will just return before they ever manage to take it as they so foolishly hope.Lesen Sie weiter... ›

Apollyon is more of the same exciting fiction found in this series. I first heard of book #1: "Left Behind" on March 3, 1999. I completed #5 "Apollyon", April 5th!! You don't get much higher praise than that!

I know that the authors are attuned to these comments as Mr. Jenkins responded to a remark last month within 24 hours. So I would like to leave some positive critism to the authors.

I just love the fact that your fiction has captivated such a wide audience. I think that it is terrific that you have been able to take a life time of research and turned it into an inspiring, entertaining, and profitable series of books! Bravo! I think that your books are a sterling example of the "American Dream". You have worked hard and now to see your work brought to such fruition must be truly heartening in many ways. I am always thankful that the America we live in, with all our current social and political shortcomings is still the land of freedom and opportunity.

I would like to suggest a couple of things, albeit minor, which I think could stand a little improvement....seeing as how I am destined to buy the full series of books, as agonizing as the wait may be!

Could you possibly refrain from using the same phrase over and over...."that sort of thing"? The other is more general......Where are our tribulation saints getting edible food & water, and other necessities of life from toothpaste to clothing?
Are there any stores open and functioning? If so how are they maintaining commerce? Does anybody go to a "job" besides the "GC"?

Ok, first of all: yes, I do love these books. This review is for everyone who loves and everyone who hates this series. Mr. Lahaye and Mr. Jenkins are Bible scholars who have studied and taught the Bible quite a bit more than most anyone reviewing this book. These books are designed to make you realize that there is one truth in this world and that the end times will be horrible for those left behind. After reading certain parts of the book, an open minded person(Christian or not) should be inclined to say to his or her self "wow, does it really predict this in the Bible?" and pick up the Bible and read it. Just because somebody's church, pastor, or even their own beliefs differ, doesn't mean they can should come and trash the books. It's the stupid, childish, bickering between Christians that make a great deal of non-Christians from accepting Christ. Why would they want to be part of that? Yes, they do back track sometimes, so someone who hasn't read all the books can be some what up to date. Yes, it is depressing, sad, and deflating at times, but guess what, SO IS THE BIBLE! I tend to think the people that trash this series are mad because it doesn't quite agree with their own interpretation(or their church's) of the Bible. The main point is that the end times will be very grim. There is only one way to get to Heaven and that is through Christ. If this book prevents even one soul from having to go through that, I give it 5 stars. PS- to those that trash these books: have you completly, I mean really completely read through the Bible? I have. The writing is sometimes boring, sometimes the communication between people not the best, sometimes it's even R-rated, but it is the best book ever written. Are you going to trash that too because there are things that are said that you find it hard to agree with? Keep up the good work Mr Jenkins and Mr. Lahaye!
