Wen - wie mich - das Abenteuer Mondlandung nie losgelassen hat, für den ist diese Buch ein unbedingtes MUSS! Der Autor erklärt detailliert die Technik des Flugs und eben vor allem diejenigen Themen, die man auf keiner der vielen Apollo-Websites findet. Wie sah die Flugbahn zum Mond genau aus, wie haben die Astronauten navigiert, welche Technik sorgte für das Fernsehbild vom Mond? Ich habe an die 50 Bücher zu dem Thema, aber dies ist eines der besten, vor allem was die präzise Erklärung der Technik für Laien betrifft.

Während in deutscher Sprache kaum sinnvolles zu den Apollo-Mondflügen erschienen ist, gibt es in englischer Sprache viele hervorragende Bücher zu den Apollo-Missionen, seien es die Biographien von Eugene Cernen, Gene Krantz, oder natürlich Andrew Chalkins monumentales Buch "A man on the moon".

All diese Bücher legen jedoch großen Wert auf die Darstellung der Menschen, die am Apollo-Projekt beteiligt waren, und räumen den technischen Aspekten nur untergeordneten Raum ein. Das ist in Ordnung, doch kam bei mir nach Lesen dieser Bücher der Wunsch auf, auch mehr über die technischen Hintergründe des Projektes zu erfahren.

Dieses Buch füllt diese Lücke, indem es bewusst auf die technischen Fragen eingeht, also die Frage, "wie" man mit den damaligen Möglichkeiten zum Mond fliegen konnte, beantwortet.

Das alleine macht das Buch schon interessant. Die Umsetzung des Zieles ist dabei hervorragend gelungen. In anschaulicher Sprache erklärt der Autor für den Laien verständlich, wie die Saturn V und das Apollo-Raumschiff aufgebaut waren, welche Phasen der Mission wie ausgeführt wurden, und warum man sich für die eine oder andere technische Möglichkeit entschied.

Wer sich für die technischen Fragen nicht interessiert, ist mit den oben genannten Büchern, besonders "A man on the Moon", besser bedient. Aber wer in verständlicher Sprache einen Gesamtüberblick über die technischen Aspekte der Mission erfahren will, ohne verwirrt zu werden, der ist mit dem Buch hervorragend bedient.

Der Preis ist angemessen, weil das Buch auch in einer ordentlichen Papierqualität hergestellt ist, und daher ziemlich umfangreich ausgefallen ist.

Man sollte der englischen Sprache mächtig sein, wobei ich das Buch gut verständlich fand. Eine absolute Empfehlung!

Ich habe als Kind die erste Mondlandung am Schwarz-Weiss Fernseher miterlebt. Damals haben wir wirklich noch geglaubt, im Weltraum gäbe es keine Schwerkraft. Aus eher sentimentalen Gründen habe ich begonnen einige Bücher über die Mondlandung zu lesen. Obwohl es gute Bücher waren, hatten sie doch alle die Menschen im Mittelpunkt. "How to..." wurde nicht erklärt. Durch eine Stichwortsuche kam auch dieses Buch auf meine Liste und wurde gekauft. Schon nach einigen Seiten war ich restlos begeistert. Die genaue Beschreibung der Technik und der Prozesse ist faszinierend. Die Komplexität ist überwältigend, und ich lernte auch, dass Weltraumflüge eigentlich ein Spiel mit der Schwerkraft sind.

Das Buch ist sehr umfangreich, daher ist die Bezeichnung "Taschenbuch" irreführend. Um den Text zu verstehen sollte man ein wenig technisches Englisch mitbringen.
