Who is looking for a book for getting an access to solr by practial experience should not buy this one. It is more or less the Apache Documentation Wiki in a book. In my humble opinion it is just waste of money...

3.0 von 5 Sternen Great idea - great set of concepts - poor attention to detail 6. Mai 2013
Von Adrian Newby - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I have to start off by saying that, without this book, I don't think I could have got my first Solr Cloud installation off the ground.

The book's layout, it's non-nonsense "do this, do that" style and the section at the end of each recipe, explaining what you just did are all great elements.

However, where this book suffers is in its attention to detail. While the author states clearly that it was based on Solr 4.0, many of the examples are either incorrect, incomplete or obsolete.

For example, using default="NEW" is discouraged in Solr 4, in favor of UUIDUpdateProcessorFactory.

Another example involves setting UTF-8 URI Encoding for Tomcat, which is an overhang from Solr 3 and no longer required in Solr 4.

The above examples are inconvenient. Some omissions are more serious. For example, in the section describing auto-generation of UUIDs for uploaded documents, while the description for setting up a UUID RequestProcessorChain is pretty straightforward, the documentation leaves out the key fact that requestHandler for /extract/update in solrconfig.xml needs to be told to invoke the uuid requestProcessor chain. Without this, the auto-generator will never be called and documents will fail upload with NULL unique keys.

Another bugbear is that spaces between words in fixed space font are often dropped. If the word looks long, chances are you're missing a space. (Note: This was on my Kindle Edition book. May not be the case in print.) This makes some commands fail.

These are just a few examples.

I wish I could recommend the book more highly but its many, many errors and omissions make this impossible. If the book goes through another round of proofreading and errata correction, it could be a solid 4-star.

if you are new to solr I would pass on this book. I personally need to come up to speed quickly on query. The examples are hard to follow and require significant understanding of solr query. If had this back ground I doubt you would find the recipes useful. You probably already know them

Also the kindle reader on mac is awkward to use. basic stuff like scrolling and font sizing do not work well.

For got to mention Its really hard to use the sample code. Its hard to figure out what code sample "task" maps to a particular recipe in the book. Finally never ever use spaces in file or directory names. It make using the code much harder

4.0 von 5 Sternen Usefull advice about implementing real world features 9. März 2014

Working with Solr can be difficult at times. There are lots of resources on the web where you can find in-depth information about how the nitty gritty mechanism in Solr work.

Sometimes you need a more practical resource. You will find this in the Apache Solr 4 Cookbook. The book contains lots of practical day to day use cases. In my case I have a general understanding of Solr and how to implement it. The the book 'Apache Solr 3 enterprise search server' which is a bit older but still very good source of information about the technical details helped a lot. Though I had the need for some practical explanations about how to go about solving Use Cases on a day to day basis.

The chapters about indexing and analysing, I found most useful as these contain the information you will need every time you setup a new Solr core or enhance the functionality for you customer.
If you do not have prior experience using Solr I would advice getting your base knowledge up to date first, as the examples and explanation expect you to already know quite a lot of Solr and searching in general.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A blueprint to getting running with Solr and getting good results 30. Januar 2014
Von A. Zubarev - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Before reading this book I have never even suspected so many kung-fu things can be done with Apache Solr (Lucene)!

To name a few: using a spellchecker, indexing binary formats (as PDF), breaking words apart, removing markup, handling plural and singular forms of words, incorporating geolocation, integration with a RDBMS.

This book definitely serves as a blueprint to doing development with Solr – it has all the necessary coverage from setting properly your environment up, incorporating other technologies as Nutch to going live and fine tune your system including an effective guide on how to deal with potential problems. As a bonus, there is a “Real-life” section that provides some help to tackling additional scenarios that the author faced in his practice, which did a lot of sense to me to be included into a Cookbook style of a publication.

The book is thoughtfully structured starting with a short description of a task at hand with how it was tackled to explaining in the details all the intricacies as what configuration needs to be affected.

The book is also very well structured paragraph-wise, it starts with the basics as installations and setting a few simple things up to dealing with more complex tasks as the book progresses toward the end. What I mean, Rafal has made this book very useful in an electronic form, for example a developer or (administrator) can quickly find in the book the needed information based on a desired accomplishment and even can copy and paste the sample configuration for further editing. To say more, the book has a good reference to several relevant supporting/complementing tools. And it would be needless to say that at the same time the author delves deep enough into how-tos of using the Solr GUI itself.

While I am still expecting my older laptop rebuilt I am really willing to get my hands on Apache Solr, this is how whetted my appetite is to explore it more after I am nearly done reading the book.

Verdict: I am sure having this book beside you will make you feel more confident in delivering your project on time with the best possible results.

It is a full 5 out 5 star rating, a big thank you Rafal and Packt Publishing!
5.0 von 5 Sternen packed full of great recipies 26. Januar 2014
Von Bill Jones - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I would disagree about googling for the recipies in this cookbook, it's something anyone could say about any technical resource. I found this book to be extremly well written and organized. The recipie on parsing data for near real time searches was well worth the cost of the book. If you aren't comfortable with apache or linux you wouldn't be looking into this book, but dont let that stop you from getting to know Solr because the Author walks you through each project.

The real life senarios are also priceless and all very well written, I am not an extensive user of Solr but tgese recepies are most common and now I have a goto source. The cloud setup was great and with more and more going into cloud computing it was great to see this made it into the book. Great book at a good price worthy of a cookbook title!
