Kurzbeschreibung

An underground pipeline has ruptured, spilling oily sludge into Minnesota’s pristine Lake Bunyan. Taking the media’s heat for Nations Oil is Corporate Communications Director Cathryn Mack, an old pro when it comes to spinning the facts in her company’s favor.

Stuck in Duluth to handle the press during eight weeks of cleanup, she finds a silver lining when Stacie Pilardi pops up on SappHere, a mobile app that seeks out nearby lesbians. Stacie is smart, funny, sexy as hell, and wants a longterm relationship as much as Cathryn—which is to say, not at all.

A perfect arrangement, until they realize they’re rivals—Stacie is head of the Clean Energy Action Network, in town to protest the greed and recklessness of oil companies and the havoc they wreak on the environment.

It’s best for everyone involved if they end this, and that’s exactly what they intend to do. Eventually...

3.0 von 5 Sternen Professionelle Schriftstellerin, mittelmässige Story 5. September 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf

5.0 von 5 Sternen A very good book that is more than a romance 20. Juni 2014
Von WinterMask - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I don't review much and when I do, I tend to focus on my favourite books. "Anyone But You" is now one of them.

I already knew that KG Macgregor is a very good writer, specially of romances. Normally, her main characters are likeable and the plots are captivating (check "Out of Love" or "The House in the Sandstone", for instance.) But in this one it is also noticeable the great amount of research done. The plots — both the romantic and the "political" — are very good. And, even when the topic gets difficult, there's a great amount of humour to make it less painful.

This one is a TOTAL winner and a joy to read.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Not perfect, but alright! 9. August 2014
Von K. Gebauer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
A very nice book with a somewhat unique setting. Since I read a significant amount of romances I appreciate novel ideas (or at least attempts to do something different). The environmental aspect of the book was a nice angle.
I am also glad that the author did not try to preach about her agenda in the book. While it advocates environmental activism, it also accepts that some people are just not able to give their everything in regards to said activism. MacGregor manages to dodge what some authors don't and doesn't make her readers feel bad about not being as engaged as one of the main characters when it comes to the environment.
I would have liked to see a bit more hesistancy on the part of our main characters when it came to their relationship. While there certainly is drama (what self-respecting lesbian romance doesn't have it?) it did not feel urgent to me. The differences between Cathryn and Stacie are made out to be huge (and they are!) and I would've liked to see them have to really work on that part of their relationship. In the end the solution seemed too easy.
While I certainly think that they fit together in the end the changes necessary for that happened while they already were in a relationship. I thought that was weird since Stacie is very aware of her convictions and the relationship with Cathryn did not fit into her worldview. I think I would have been more convinced if Cathryn had to think about the actions of Nations Oil and work on herself before they gave a relationship a shot.

All this sounds very negative, but it is relatively easy to ignore or to accept (maybe I'm just a nitpicker).
What bothered me more was how naive Cathryn seemed. She is in a very high position in her company, poised to become VP even. And still she doesn't know anything about the shady happenings going on? I'm going to put a light
SPOILER
here to make you understand what I am talking about:
While it is said in the book that companies hide specific (darker) happenings from even their own people to be able to deny them and not be caught lying, it just didn't make sense to me. Not knowing about something doesn't make it less true. When the truth about the from the oil spill affected animals came out it still was a scandal and not made better by Cathryn being able to say: "Well, I didn't know the truth!". Also leaving someone you want to make VP out of the loop was hard to believe for me. Plus in many many cases Cathryn seemed geniunely surprised by what her superiors did and how far they were willing to go. Really? She's been working in the company for 22 years and I'm supposed to believe she still sees here bosses as nice human beings that wouldn't hurt a fly on purpose? Sorry, seems a bit unbelievable.
SPOILER END.

Phew, got pretty long there.
All in all the book isn't bad. I felt that there were inconsistencies with Cathryns character in regards to her job and how she perceives her bosses and co-workers, but the topic is fresh and interesting and the romance (while it does have problems as I described) is believable. Your money won't be wasted on the book, but I think there are better ones out there.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Full marks on all levels. 5. Juli 2014
Von hellbound - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
This is KG MacGregor at her very best and a book that she should be justifiably proud of.
This book was written with a beautiful balance between environmental righteousness and big-business greed. The gruesome results of the catastrophe where delicately handled, as was the cover-up, and the growing relationship between the two women left to publicly sort out the mess exquisitely wove everything together.
I felt that her research for both sides of the debate is evident and balanced without forcing her personal beliefs down the readers throat. That made this book a thoughtful read and allowed the reader to form their own opinions.

I try to avoid topics that distress me and environmental vandalism is one of them but in this case I got over myself and give Ms MacGregor the full five stars instead of my initial four.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A great story with great characters! 5. Juli 2014
Von RLynne - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
As our nation debates the pipeline which would run from Canada to New Orleans, and which would carry oil from tar sands, KG Mac Gregor has given her fans a novel which debates the pros and cons of Big Oil and oil from tar sands. It's two protagonists are both bright, likeable, strong women. Cathryn Mack is the Corporate Communications Director for Nations Oil, which has just had an oil spill in a pristine lake in northern Minnesota. Stacie Pilardi is head of the Clean Energy Action Network. When these two women meet, there is an instant attraction between them. . . which is threatened when they discover they are on opposite sides of the environmental issue. KG Mac Gregor always does the research needed to provide her readers with facts. She also is able to mix a good love story into her plot, even as cutting edge of a plot as this one is. Anyone But You is filled with passion, deceit, greed, and even thugs. And, it's a book I couldn't put down and which will stay with me for a long time.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent anatomy of the corporate mechanics with a lovely romance 15. Juni 2014
Von Philologus - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
This is one of the best books I have read for some time. My first reaction when the story unfolded was: "Who the heck put tar sand into KG's cheerios?" Because the backbone of this book is an unvarnished report of the mechanics of corporate greed and cover-up …. and the not-so-well-armed militia trying to stave away the tyrants. And it takes someone with KG's penwomanship to weave a lovely romance into a story which becomes ever more interesting and credible - and at times outright witty - during the book. It was with great reluctance that I parted ways with the story at the end - both main characters had grown on me so much. Sweet read with a very serious background.
