Produktbeschreibungen

From Library Journal

Rand's dark portrait of the future was first released in England in 1938 and reedited for publication in the United States in 1946. This 50th-anniversary edition includes a scholarly introduction and a facsimile of the original British version, which bears Rand's handwritten alterations for its American debut.

Kurzbeschreibung

Written with all the power and conviction that made The Fountainhead a classic of American letters, Ayn Rand's Anthem is a hymn to man's independent spirit and to the highest word in the human language - "Ego." First written in 1937, Anthem was published in England, but was refused in publication in America, for reason which the reader might discover by reading it for himself. In 1946, it appeared as a pamphlet, issued by Pamphleteers, Inc., of Los Angeles. This is its first American publication in regular book form. Anthem tells the story of a man who rediscovers the individualism and his own "I" - in a world of absolute collectivization, a world where sightless, joyless, selfless men exist for the sake of serving the State; where their work, their food and their mating are prescribed to them by order of the Collective's rulers in the name of society's welfare - a world which has lost all the achievements of science and civilization, when it lost their root, the independent mind, and has reverted to primitive savagery - a world where language contains no singular pronouns, where the "We" has replaced the "I," and where men are put to death for the crime of discovering and speaking the "unspeakable word." The story tells of one man who rebelled, of his struggle and his victory. Assigned to the life work of street sweeper by the rulers who resented his brilliant, questioning, unsubmissive mind - he becomes a scientist, secretly, risking his life for the sake of his quest for knowledge. In the midst of collective stagnation, where men toil at manual labor by the light of candles - he discovers electricity. In the midst of eugenic planning and State-controlled Palaces of Mating - he discovers a personal love and a woman of his own choice. In the midst of brutal morality which proclaims that man is only a sacrificial animal to the needs of others - he discovers that man's greatest moral duty is the pursuit of his own happiness. He endures danger, denunciation, imprisonment, torture - but he breaks the chains of the Collective, he escapes with the woman he loves, to start a new life in an uncharted wilderness, and he reaches the day when he is able to predict that "my home will become the capital of a world where each man will be free to exist for his own sake." Anthem presents not merely a frightening projection of existing trends, but, more importantly, a positive answer to those trends and a weapon against them, a key to the world's moral crisis and to a new morality of individualism - a morality which, if accepted today, will save us from a future such as the one presented in this story.

Although this book can be read in a matter of hours the impressions left will last a lifetime. Unfortunately the message is less important today than it may have been when socialism and communism were still thought as viable models of government. Ayn Rand loves the individual spirit and her writings show the passion and fears associated with a movement that would take this away. She had left Russia at an early age to come to America. Only a person that has lived in an oppressive society could write such moving books about the strength of individualism, competitive industry, the terror of collectivism. This short book is written as no other. The words and ideas are expressed so beautifully. If one needs a boost to their individual spirit, this work will definitely help

My Favorite Book 5. Mai 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
I was first introduced to Ayn Rand by reading We the Living, however Anthem enlightened me on individualism and stimulated me to question my morals and values to which I base my life on. Despite its lack of a plot, I found this to be the most intriguing and exciting book I have ever read. From the very first gripping sentence to the last word, I felt as if Ayn Rand knew exactly what I was thinking. I am only in 9th grade, but I feel confident that I understand the whole spectrum of individualism and Objectivism, which is beautifully illustrated in this prophetic novella; an anthem; an ode to man, not men. I urge anyone, specifically teenagers who feel secluded from groups, cliques, etc. to read this book, because it is the source of my individualistic confidence and it outlines my potential to which I must live up to as a human being.

Eternally Fresh 10. April 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I attended a liberal college in the 70's with the usual groups - radical theology students, Marxist economic teachers, philosphy professors praising the power of drugs, marches. I slipped into the bookstore to avoid a demonstration one day and found this book. I thought then it was a gem but have not read it in 27 years. I picked it up the other day and reread it and found it as fresh and exciting as the first time. Both the language and the spirit of the novel were so refreshingly different from the feel good, amoral, smirky tone prevalent in current bestsellers.

Anthem is almost a work of poetry - absolutely amazing considering it is written in a second language. The book's tone is almost religious, a tribute to the human, not the divine spirit. I suspect those writing the most polemical reviews disagree more with the book's philosophy than the literature. It should be offered in junior high and high school as a classic. For today's youth (I have two) it may be too intellectual, expect too much from the reader. It will be difficult for those with a certain philosophical bent to enjoy this book. It is uncompromisingly relentless in its vision of a collectivistic world. But it also unabashedly rejoices in the indominatable strenth of the individual. Very good read.

I liked it enough..
Anthem was good enough to be great, but i think it could've used a little help. Equality 7-2521 really needs help in the mind, but should be okay after a while. Lesen Sie weiter...
