The first book in the groundbreaking Chronicles of the Nameless Dwarf.

Nils Fargin reckons he's a big fish in a little pond. After all, he's son of a guildmaster, ain't he? But when he arrives at the brigand settlements in the Outlands, he may be a tad out of his depth.

It had seemed a straight forward enough task, leading a dwarf with no name to the wizard Jankson Brau. Plan was to get some information about a bunch of dwarves who'd headed through the Malfen Pass.

Trouble is, the dwarves are the survivors of the recent massacre at the ravine city, Arx Gravis, and Nils's companion, the Nameless Dwarf, is none other than the butcher they are fleeing from.

Like it or not, Nils's path takes him to the bandit town of Malfen, where the Nameless Dwarf must confront its terrifying ruler, Shent, the Ant-Man.

"I can say with no hyperbole that D.P. Prior is one of the most promising fantasy writers emerging on the scene today. Featuring a style that's intelligent yet accessible, imaginative yet concrete, the books in his Chronicles of the Nameless Dwarf series are a must for anyone hoping to get a sense of what's next in the fantasy genre. All of the books are highly rated and backed by respected reviewers, meaning this should more than tide you over until the next season of Game of Thrones starts." (The Kindle Fire Department)

4.0 von 5 Sternen Es ist toll! Sehr gut--wunderbar! 26. April 2011
This is the second book I've read from Prior and I am again thoroughly impressed. Prior quickly captures the reader's interest with a teaser about who the nameless dwarf is and why he is so feared. Though Nameless' first appearance is more than 20 pages into the book, the reader is already anxious about him well before he arrives on the scene (in a way slightly reminiscent of the shark in 'Jaws'). Although the reasons behind Nameless' reputation is partially revealed in his regret-tinged ruminations later in the book, I would have liked a bit more development in this area--perhaps an encounter with someone who had narrowly escaped him previously?

The story line is suspenseful and engaging but also fun and, at times, very funny. This is quite an impressive range for such a short book!

Despite being little more than 80 pages long, the characterization is very well-developed--particularly the pathos of the Ant-Man. Without giving too much away, Prior is able to radically shift the reader's perception of this character in the space of only a few sentences. Very impressive. Likewise, his treatment of the unlikable and annoying Nils was brilliant. Early on, Prior seems to intentionally make the reader long for Nameless (or anyone) to take an axe to Nils! And of course, the lightning-fast mood swings of the manic-depressive Nameless are wonderfully executed. The level of character development in 'Ant-Man' is massively improved from that in Prior's earlier work 'Thanatos Rising'.

That said, this book suffers from the same key problem as 'Thanatos': it is too short! This story could have easily been expanded into a 200-300 page novel. I would have loved to have been able to read more...

5.0 von 5 Sternen The Ant-Man of Malfen 30. Dezember 2010
Von PJB - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
This novella is masterfully written. I think the resurrection of the character Nameless was such an excellent move on the part of the author. Nameless is a nasty piece of work but you can help but feel empathy for him. The other characters are well rounded and I especially like Ilesa, who has the ability to change into what you want to see. This is a great addition to the Shader series. I cannot wait for the next book.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Dwarf on insect violence! 16. Januar 2011

The Ant-Man of Malfen has three main characters: The Nameless Dwarf, Nils, and Silas. The Nameless Dwarf is ,obviously, a dwarf. His moods tend to hit extremes in either depression or homicidal rage. There is also drunk which seems to be a mood in itself. Nils is the son of the leader of the largest and most powerful crime lord in New Jerusalem. Silas is a wizard who is haunted by grimoire filled with dark secrets. The dwarf and Silas both have the same destination in mind and Nils just kind of gets sucked along. In order to get where they need to go they must travel through the town of Malfen and deal with its ruler the Ant-Man.

The story is well written and I will look into other books by Mr. Prior. I think I would have enjoyed to story much more if I already had some knowledge of the Nameless Dwarf and his backstory.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A short tale (can't believe I went there) 28. Januar 2012
Von T. Edmund - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
Not being familiar with the world, I wasn't too sure what I was going to get myself into with this novella. Prior provides a helpful foreword introducing Nameless - a dwarf supertank whose origins lie in the early role-playing games of this author's youth.

Its probably a no-brainer to point out this is fantasy adventure at its most pure. In a short novella Prior packs in a massiva amount of world-building and history, and despite the actual story being fairly basic (hey it is a novella after all) the characters have just enough depth to remain interesting and tempt one to continue following the Nameless Dwarf...

4.0 von 5 Sternen Short, but good. If you like Moorcock, Mieville or Hobb, read this 30. November 2011
Von Kristan Dawkins - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
This short novel is a written in such a way that any reader can pick it and read it, and still understand what's going on. There are explanations that tie this to a larger world and greater story arc that make this book self contained.
I found this to be written like Moorcock, Mieville or Hobb, with a complex main character who is the protagonist and his own antagonist. Nameless is likeable and I identified with his pathos and found the occasional memory or extra information was not distracting from the story line. The world is gritty, if a little thin. The ending is a bit abrupt, and I was left with wanting to know what happened next.
I walked away wanting to read the rest of the books related to this world.

4.0 von 5 Sternen An interesting novelet 15. August 2011
Von Anniepoo - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
With less exposition and backstory regarding the extensive and interesting world that D.P. Prior has created, this would be a short story. I can't help but wonder if readers already familiar with the other works would get a bit bored in places. Nevertheless, the writing is good enough that I was interested throughout and now have a desire to seek out the earlier books. I just hope that knowing so many 'spoilers' now won't spoil it for me. Re C.S. Marks being listed as an author, apparently she provided the cover artwork, which unfortunately did not come with the kindle edition ... perhaps the publisher will fix the oversight and we can redownload.
