Monika Marons 'Animal triste',

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Animal triste (Taschenbuch)
In the summer after the fall of the Wall, beneath the magnificent skeleton of the brachiosaurus in Berlin's Natural History Museum, Maron's nameless, East German protagonist and narrator meets and falls in love with West German Franz. Several years into the future, writing now as an elderly woman alone and withdrawn from society, she relives her relationship with Franz through a series of memories, and tells the story of passionate love, obsession and personal destruction.Although there are times in the novel when readers may find the narrator's recollection of events confusing to understand, as many of her memories are disjointed, incomplete, and often figments of her own imagination, this cleverly emphasises even more her obsessive love for Franz. Deeply possessed by this love affair, it is the memories of her lover that she can recall in an extremely clear and detailed way, as if they only happened yesterday. On the other hand, she willingly forgets or distorts memories that remind her of unhappy or troubled times to make room for those where she felt absolute happiness. Maron evokes great sympathy in the reader towards her narrator, who is unable to let go of her lost love and as a result spends the majority of her life suffering alone, secluded from the world. Yet Animal triste is more than just a love story, as Maron expertly explores the emotional and cultural problems facing East and West Germans at the time of reunification. Through the vivid narrative, the reader becomes aware of the narrator's constant struggle to adapt to post-Wende life, and the ongoing search for her identity in a country that she no longer feels familiar with. The failed love affair of the narrator and Franz undoubtedly echoes the conflict between both East and West Germany, as they try and overcome forty years of separation. An excellent example of post-Wende literature, Animal triste will certainly appeal to those interested in Germany's historical and political situation at the time of reunification. Combined also with its compelling love story, tainted with intense suffering, the novel will surely capture the interests of a widespread audience. Monika Maron, 'Animal Triste',
Von Jamie Lee Searle (Großbritannien (Universität Exeter)) - Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Animal triste (Taschenbuch)
'Man kann im Leben nichts versäumen als die Liebe'. This realisation and a chance meeting beneath a brachiosaurus skeleton act as the catalysts for an obsessive love affair set in post-reunification Berlin. The narrator, an elderly woman from the former East - who remains nameless and of vaguely defined age - looks back from the distant future to chronicle her relationship with a West German man in the summer of 1990. An element of suspense regarding the denouement is consistently maintained, as the reader is at the mercy of a narrator who openly admits that her words are a merge of reality and imagination. One of the novel's intriguing features is this approach to the concept of memory: moments of clarity regarding times spent with her lover are juxtaposed with her inability - or indeed unwillingness - to recall his real name (calling him Franz for the sake of the story) or even the reason why their affair came to an end. Her obsessive relationship with the past is striking, as she has removed herself from society, living the life of a recluse in her apartment and repeatedly re-enacting nights from that summer in her mind. The obvious frustrations which arise for the reader through the incomplete - and possibly inaccurate - depiction of events are overcome by the sensitive portrayal of the need for physical and emotional love in later life. Alongside the story of their affair a number of other couples brought together or divided by the fall of the Berlin Wall provide further depth to the narrative. Readers aware of the complexities and trials of post-Wende Germany will appreciate the obvious parallels which can be drawn between the narrator's doomed love affair and the somewhat unhappy union of East and West. The narrator's rejection of the present and future, considered in its post-reunification context, can be likened to the desire of many former East Germans to preserve memories of their lives in the GDR. However, the novel's considerable appeal to a larger readership lies in its heartfelt portrayal of the sufferings of a broken heart and sense of dislocation in a world of cultural and political shifts. Rezension bezieht sich auf: Animal triste (Taschenbuch)
It's not every day you come across a piece of literature which incorporates an eclectic mix of pre-historic life, obsessive love and heartbreaking reminiscence, all assembled within a post- Wende setting. Animal Triste most definitely oversteps the boundaries of your typical tale of love and loss.Maron's work, published after Germany's Reunification, may indeed appeal to the curiosity of historically adept readers, yet the portrayal of this all-consuming fictional love affair can simultaneously capture the attention of many others. The unnamed narrator, a palaeontologist from East Germany, embarks on a relationship with a married West German man, Franz, following the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the resulting fall of Socialism in the GDR. Since this encounter commences at such a decisive point in history, the more informed reader will undoubtedly draw parallels between these East and West German lovers and the political situation at that time; the amalgamation of two entities, West and East Germany. This love affair is by no means as straightforward as it seems, it is narrated to us from an unspecified point in time in the future, by a narrator who meticulously relives its details with such painstaking, animalistic obsession, that the time which has elapsed since the end of the affair has lost all significance: `so vergeht die Zeit, und vergeht doch nicht.' It is only through Maron's ability to take hold of the notion of love and strip it back to its bare, primitive state that allows her explore the power of instinct over reason. The end result is a compelling focus on how the unrelenting influence of the past, the inevitable advancement of time and the recovery of memory mould our perceptions of the future; concepts relevant not only to this particular historical context but to life itself. As a reader you are swept into the narrator's methodical recollections, their circularity heightens our desire to unearth the truth and clarify the inconsistencies symptomatic of this account. The intensity of the narrator's emotions becomes so genuinely convincing, that as a human being you can't help but be consumed by them.
