Kurzbeschreibung

Android Security: Attacks and Defenses is for anyone interested in learning about the strengths and weaknesses of the Android platform from a security perspective. Starting with an introduction to Android OS architecture and application programming, it will help readers get up to speed on the basics of the Android platform and its security issues.

Explaining the Android security model and architecture, the book describes Android permissions, including Manifest permissions, to help readers analyze applications and understand permission requirements. It also rates the Android permissions based on security implications and covers JEB Decompiler.

The authors describe how to write Android bots in JAVA and how to use reversing tools to decompile any Android application. They also cover the Android file system, including import directories and files, so readers can perform basic forensic analysis on file system and SD cards. The book includes access to a wealth of resources on its website: www.androidinsecurity.com. It explains how to crack SecureApp.apk discussed in the text and also makes the application available on its site.

The book includes coverage of advanced topics such as reverse engineering and forensics, mobile device pen-testing methodology, malware analysis, secure coding, and hardening guidelines for Android. It also explains how to analyze security implications for Android mobile devices/applications and incorporate them into enterprise SDLC processes.

The book’s site includes a resource section where readers can access downloads for applications, tools created by users, and sample applications created by the authors under the Resource section. 4.0 von 5 Sternen Guter Einstieg aber schon nicht mehr Aktuell 22. Februar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf

Juni 2014
Von Oko - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Verifizierter Kauf
Unfortunately this book was waste of time for me. It is a small book in size and volume. Also, even though it is indicated that this was a paperback, I received a hardcover. Why would a book this size be hardcover? That is probably why it is priced at $52. It is highly overpriced.

As another reviewer indicated, book has too many figures, one after another after another, pages and pages of figures with no text between them. It gives the impression that authors tried to fill the book up to make it look like a book! Many of these figures are ugly black screen shots. Because of the smaller physical dimensions of the book, many figures are located landscape filling up the whole page making it even more difficult to read.

Content-wise, it sounds more like a college-level survey report than a professional work. For example, at least two chapters start with repeating the title of the chapter. You go like "hmm interesting!" When I read a book, especially in an area that I am familiar with, I ask the question "what is the contribution of this book?" I do not have an answer for this one. Looks more like content collected from other sources and put together, and again as another reviewer said, there are no references to indicate the source of the information. Also, I cannot find proper audiences for this one. It is too shallow for technical folks, on the other hand, for managers or CIOs, CTOs, etc. a book just for one platform (in this case Android) would not be very useful. There are other books for instance looking at mobile security in general and has deeper content in Android itself. Also, the entire Android permissions are given as a table in an Appendix. This does not serve much other than filling up some more space, it would be sufficient to give a link to the source of the information as it can be updated quickly and make the table obsolete. Again, same information are provided as a link in some other books.

I had to return the book. I could keep it for maybe under $10. This is in comparison to price of other books in mobile security (this is by far the most expensive one) or just richness of the content of any book in Amazon.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Timely Book on Android 27. Juli 2013
Von F. Scholl - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Verifizierter Kauf
Today the NY Times reports that smartphone sales grew by 52% last quarter, including 238 million devices shipped. A good chunk of these run the Android OS. It seems clear that there will be new security attacks using this platform, although it is not clear exactly what the attack vector will be. The authors of Android Security Attacks and Defenses have written a very timely book in this area. It is aimed at a broad audience, excluding experts in Android security. It contains a good chapter introducing Android and chapters on Android architecture. It also includes chapters on Android's built in security, pen testing Android, reverse engineering Android apps, and extracting data from Android. The authors are clearly experts on these topics, which do cover a lot of ground.
I gave the book three stars, rather than four, because: there are 50+ screen shots covering 50+ pages, too many in my opinion; the book's objective is to help relative newbies, but there is no list of references; there is only one short chapter on securing Android, the rest discussing vulnerabilities. I enjoyed the book. If you are looking for a single reference to introduce you to Android and Android vulnerabilities, the book is worth looking at.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Not Worth It. 2. Oktober 2014
Von Nyck - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Verifizierter Kauf
It's not often that you find a book this overpriced with this little content. Entire pages were dedicated to images that did little to enhance the author's point and only seemed to serve the purpose of increasing the page count. Android security is a Big Deal nowadays, but I feel there are better books out there for someone who is interested in learning more about it. For instance, Wiley's Android Hacker's Handbook goes into much more detail and covers many more topics than this little pamphlet and somehow manages to cost even less.

The only reason I give it two stars rather than one is because it does -technically- contain the information is advertises. If you want a brief, semi-topical, layman's introduction to Android security without any of the hard technical details, this -may- be the book for you? However, I still strongly advise against it.
